I hate the look of AI Sol LED's.
I have two of them I use on my frag tank...no complaints there.  I moved them to my display to see what it would look like. It looked like a rave in there. The shimmer is ablsolutely out of control.
Does anyone else share my sentiments? OR am I all alone here? I run t-5s so I get a clinical hospital look of my tank. So it may take some getting used to. But still. The shimmer. Too much.

I went from T-5s to AI Sol LED's and thought the same thing, did not like it the first few days. I took a little water movement off the surface and that helped. I don’t notice the shimmer anymore and love the lights and look of the tank, I am ramped up to 70% at peak.

Taking some water movement away from the surface does help. I also played around with adding a couple VHO bulbs to the mix, I was looking to see what it did with the colors, but it also seemed to calm the shimmer down as well. May be something to look into if you're wanting to keep the AI's over your display.

I as well took water flow away from the surface. I got the same shimmer too. I realize you have, is it 4 mp40's? Might have to tone them down a bit. Once I killed the surface water movement, everything is golden. Gl Jim, sorry for your disappointment, I love my sol blues, I have 5 /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

LOL...your statement about it looking like a rave in your tank cracked me up...gave me a visual of your tank with your fish and corals acting all crazy, your LEDs doing the laser light show type effects, fish dropping x, dosing too much vodka, and spawning all over...haha  Too funny...

you can change the optics to 70* ( i think ) and it helps blend the light together. a friend of mine did it, and it looks a lot better

I have to wonder if you had a strange color balance going on. I love the look in my tank.

    Yup...hate them.
Might as well have a disco ball above your tank.

Me to Jason, I just don't think LED's can match the sun light as good as MH - this is just my opinon and I do not want to start a debate here[IMG]
I"m following Vivid Aquariums 800 gallon system half with radions and the other half with MH closely to see what they can discover.

The disco shimmer effect is the biggest turn off with these lights.  I think looking at the dancing lights on the sand could give me a migraine if I stared at one spot to long... Im hoping these LED companies come out with some sort of lens that would eliminate this.

Jim, give it some time. Once you get used to them you won't even notice it anymore. I didn't realize I had Saturday Night Fever going on in my tank until it was pointed out to me; thanks Jeff! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

thats what the 70 optics are for. a better blending of the light, without the spotlight type shimmer

MH 100%....have seen some nice Led tanks though. I have also seen and been following the Vivid aquarium site with the comparison.

I thought that the first time I looked at Matt Nelsen's tank, he's got a DIY LED fixture and I swear after 10 minutes of looking at his tank that I was going to have a seizure. It actually gave me a headache. I believe going to wider lenses lessens the effect. Multiple point sources is the reason for the problem though and it's a little hard to get away from with LEDs. Everyone wants to drive the light deep down with tight lenses but I'm thinking that when I do mine they will be bare with a mirrored canopy and we'll see how that turns out.

I don't agree with any of this at all, just my opinion. I have 2 AI sol's over my 75 and I wouldnt trade em for nothing. I love the way it looks and I dont think it has that much shimmer. Isnt that why everyone likes MH anyways cause of the shimmer? Maybe its the height of the lights over the tank or something. But I find my Ai's to have just as much shimmer as a MH and nothing more. Love em.
