I need to move my sump a bit to make room for an ATO system. I've been wanting to get it clean for awhile now as there is some mulm in the bottom and on the sand. Anyone take theirs out and clean them up? Also thinking about removing the sand and just putting LR in it. Any thoughts? I also may be in need of some chaeto afterwards too.[IMG]

I've done it on 3 systems. Getting rid of the mulm (I assume that's the brown gunky buildup?) is never a bad idea.

As for removing the sand, is this a DSB? Emptying the sump to clean and move it will disturb it and you may lose some or all of your denitrification capability. Though I have no experience with DSB so what do I know...just guessing.

I did this recently. I just used a wet/dry shop vac to pull everything out of there since you can't really siphon well from a ground level sump. Works quite well.

I think removing the sand and putting the LR in is a good idea, I also agree with Actuary on using the shop vac, you don't stir things up half as bad.
