I'm gonna fall on my dozens of conversations with Murray Camp on this subject. Skimmers are great and likely serve multiple purposes, gas exchange being one of the obvious ones. But there really is a point of diminishing returns. He says he doesn't go on RC because he is tired of the "my skimmer is bigger than yours argument".

Take a system and put a bunch of different equipment on it that is all undersized and is adds up to greater than the need for the tank. A conservatively sized yet quality skimmer, an algae scrubber or a refugium, some carbon, maybe GFO (only if you need it), some kind of carbon dosing, maintain your alk cal mag salinity and to some extent pH, keep your nitrates and phosphates under control (no necessarily zero) and watch your system take off in 6 months.

Yeah, the skimmer wars are really old. I think that is fueled by people looking for a magic bullet. I have a diy algae scrubber that I think has helped a great deal. Nuisance algae is non-existent in my DT. What I like is that I can build a skimmer for $30 that skims as well or better than a $200 + set up.
