I find with Alk that I go through so much of it that the BRS is a nice bargain for the quantity.
Do you have corals in the tank now? Things seem to absorb Alk faster than they do Ca and Mg.
I try to have my sump turn over about 5x-7x/hour, slower gives it more time in the skimmer and whatever else you have in your sump.
Could be the sudden change in lighting and lighting levels but I wouldn't quote me on that. Anthias were always touchy with me....

I think the lowered water changes will help let your system use up the alk. Just be careful of it not getting too high when you start back up again
