I am finally jumping into my aquarium and I am needing help getting everything I need to get started. I know this is a extremely broad question with probably thousands of variations I just need someone to narrow it down and list what I would for a build. I want a 170 to 220 gallon rectangle tank with coral and fish, a quarantine tank, and was thinking of possibly putting the sump tank in the basement in the room below where the tank would be due to access to more space, water, and drain all in close proximity. I can't afford to go all out but from kind of looking around a bit was trying to keep it around 3k and was hoping to get setup ...

With that budget I would recommend trying to find a tank that size already set up and running. Or a set up currently down so you can get everything cheaper in one shot. The normal tank consists of the tank, stand, sump, return pump, skimmer, lighting, and usually a media reactor. In the tank you will need powerheads for water movement. Also you will need dry/live rock and substrate. If you want to go from the basement you will need a bigger pump that can push water up that far. You may want to consider a bigger sump too for when the pump shuts off you will have a lot more water in the plumbing coming back into the sump.

I went to farm and fleet and bought a 70 gallon 6 foot long stock tank for my basement sump. And pump large enough to push water at the flow rate and head pressure I had. There is a head loss calculator on reef central home page.
I had to drill the tank for the pan world pump I am using. Lots of good external pumps out there. When you plumb it make sure you plan for future add on like frag tank reactors, refugium or whatever. Do your research and come up with a good plan.
I love my basement sump. Lots of room to work and I can use large equipment.

That is very doable. So you are starting from scratch?

I am in La Porte if you want to come down & check out my set up and brainstorm with you.
