Anyone have any designs they're really in love with for a 20g sump? I'm looking to build one and have been digging through Google Images to see what is out there and have mixed-n-matched to come up with this:

Trouble is I have no idea if it will work or not. I'm not looking to do anything crazy, just your standard sump for equipment and a refugium.

In particular I'm wondering if the first baffle at 8" is high enough; maybe 9 or 10" would be better? I saw @Actuary@Actuary's sump and liked the idea of the media shelf, but not sure if it would really work in this smaller one. Is 1/2" glass enough for the baffles? Do I take an 1/8" off the width of the tank for the silicone when I get the baffles cut? Tried combing through the archives looking for answers to this stuff but couldn't find anything, so sorry if this is a repeat post. Thanks in advance for the advice!

I would make your media shelf deeper so it can hold more media. 1/8 is perfect. You can go 9" and then use egg create if your skimmer needs to be raised up.. Other than that it looks real good! If your DT is bigger then 55, I would go to a 40 breeder. Wait for the Petco dollar per gallon sale.

Thanks @SteveV@SteveV. It's going to be going on a 65 and was thinking the approximate 1/3 of DT volume would be enough, plus I'd have a little room on the side for storage or containers for autodosing. I'll have to think about the 40 though while I mull everything over.

    Looks pretty good!

If it makes you feel any better, that new sump of mine is actually the first sump I've ever had which utilizes baffles. These finer details aren't going to make or break anything.. they are all just "nice to haves" at this point in my opinion. 1/4" glass should be adequate for baffles in a 20g sump.. 1/2" would be extreme overkill. You're right on with 1/8th inch gap on the glass (as long as the baffles are glass rather than acrylic).

In regards to your height on the first baffle you're going to essentially set the height of the first chamber with that baffle. You have two things to keep in mind here.. backflow volume and skimmer depth. Make sure your empty space in the sump can accommodate the backflow in the event of a power outage (I determined how many gallons would backflow into the sump and solved for the appropriate empty volume). Since your first chamber is going to house the skimmer you may want to set it at an ideal depth for your skimmer (since many are sensitive to water depth) or you may need to build a shelf later for the skimmer to sit on.

Oh... and you also may want to research a little on whether you want your current bubble trap design (over, under, over) or a the under, over, under design. I went with the later. There seem to be pros and cons with each. However, since your overflow is already going over the first baffle which should keep most of the bubbles out of the lower regions of your second chamber, I think you're probably better off switching your bubble trap around. If you would have had your bubble trap situated right after your overflow I would have a different opinion.

I think everything has been covered pretty well. Only thing I would add is to make sure you have your equipment and make sure it fits where you want before finalizing dimensions.
As for glass thickness 1/4" as mentioned is plenty adequate. For a tank that size it's still probably overkill.

I don't have all of the equipment yet but have been keeping that in mind, especially the skimmer. This is what I've got on my BRS wishlist currently, which should fit easily in the 9" intake. I did a little bit more digging, not that it required a lot, and found for this skimmer the recommended water level is between 6-10" so I may stick with my 8" first baffle.

Also you might think about the location of the bubble trap. Usually that's only there for the skimmer output, and you want the fuge to be low flow (depends on what you are doing with it) so if you go (left to right) intake/skimmer, bubble trap, return, fuge then feed the fuge separately with a lower flow (or an MJ900 from the intake section, etc) that is an option too

I hadn't thought of this and may pick your brain a little bit while we're working the admission table next weekend. I'm not ready to build the sump quite yet; working on getting a temporary 45 up and running and building a new stand for the 65.
