I thought I read having live rock and live sand would be enough to start a cycle AJ?

I am going to add a little more sand tonight, then tomorrow I will clean out the sponge.

I have to call oceanic...I did not receive a guard for my pump in the back....hopefully they send me one.

Ya Jay, I'll have to play around with the rock and see how we want it stacked...still have to get 1 more blower once I want corals I think.

I'm by no means an expert, but here's my understanding on it.

You can cycle with just live rock, however, as soon as you add fish, you will incur another small cycle. Adding a small, resilient, fish will help to increase the amount of ammonia in your tank resulting in more bacteria production and making your tank ready for other fish and inverts more quickly.

I would encourage you to research it more for additional information on the specifics.

Yea I used live sand, and after I put my snails and stuff in I had a mini cycle. I did mine in step though, put the sand and water in first and let it go for acouple days, then added rock, and let it go about 2 weeks, and then added a couple snails, and waited another week, then fish. Worked perfect for me.

Also I would like to add, with a Biocube. I would use some Chemi-Pure Elite. I saw a great difference in the look and overall appearance and parameters in my Nano when I started using this stuff.

Not sure if you have seen this stuff yet but worth a look. A lot of people over on nano-reef love his products. http://shop.mediabaskets.com/BioCube-29_c16.htm

I have never seen that site before, some decent ideas on there for sure, I might consider some of the fuge stuff in the future, just to make it easier and cleaner. Thanks Gered!

Ok, so the tank has been set-up since last sunday (live rock, live sand, lights off) and I don't think I have started my cycles. Shoudl I drop in a fish (from my fw tank) to start the cycling or just hold off a few more days and see if my cycles start?

I haven't changed anything with the water yet, but I did do some aquascaping last Monday to re-arrange the rocks...tank cleared over night.

Any inputs welcome. Jay thinks I have about 2 weeks of cycling left and I have not gone through my Amonia cycle yet.

Oh ya, if u can't tell, I am anxious to put stuff in, but know patients is a virtue in Saltwater tanks.

    Thanks!

I would just be patient, mine took about 2-3 weeks to cycle, then I had a mini cycle after I added CUC

I picked up my 2 black and white clowns Jay was feeding and holding for me while my tank cycled. The two little guys (about 3/4") were put into a breeder net and in the tank last night. All was well this morning and they ate a little bit both last night and this morning.

A reefs2go.com order was placed and I will be getting the CUC and a YWG next tuesday....may be taking the day off to play...

Will get some pictures when I get the CUC and everything else in.

    I GOT CRABS!!!

Well, I got more than crabs. I got an order in from reefs2go with my blue legged hermit crabs, some snails, a Yellow Watchman Goby, 2 Green Chromis, and 2 Pepermint shrimp.

I aclimated them and they are now all in the tank. The fish seems to be doing ok, and the crabs and pepermint shrimp are already busy cleaning. The snails seem to be randomly moving about, but not burrowing in the sand yet.

Will get some pictures with the new additions and two black clowns in the tank.

i got 10 nastrea snails and 2 astrea snails. right now I think the stuff in the sand is a bit lacking for them to eat but the crabs and shirmp have already started on the stuff on my rocks. Chromis and goby all looked very healthy when I got them.

Yea I have 4 big nastrea and about 25 little ones, and 7 astreas in my 12g. The mini nastrea are cool, and perfect size for the nano. Just picked up a shrimp today.
