I'm looking for some feed back...

I was looking into building a sump for my BioCube. I already have all the equipment I need.
Has anyone ever done this before? Im thinking of drilling into the back and replacing the return line with better lockline and PVC plumbing from a better return pump. I need Ideas or a better way of doing it. Any feedback would be great.

I haven't done that before but I'm big believer in sumps and would say to go for it :) if you want ideas how to do it or what works/doesn't, check reefcentral. There is a separate forum just for biocubes as there's a large following for these tanks.
Post pics if/when you do it, sounds like a fun project.

Seems like I saw a build on here. The person took all the trim off so the tank was just the glass/drilled and installed a sump. I have a 14g and a 21g but Im mostly wanting to upgrade the lights.

I just watched a nice YouTube video on how this guy sumped his biocube. The video came up with the search of "29g biocube sump install". He used a hang on overflow box to transfer the water but being an acrylic tank you could just drill it for a bulkhead.

I have seen the video you are speeking about. Not a big fan of that way. I think i'm gonna just drill.
Still looking for ideas and ways to go about it. Also I think I'm gonna just post here as I go along in this build. Next post will cover the back story of this tank and stand.

    Okay so lets start...

I needed to run to the local caseys to stock up on my very needed chewing tobacco the other night.
My wife, who hates this habbit of mine decided she would come along. I think it was to try and guilt trip me into not buying it.
It's didn't work. Anyways on the way home we noticed that the communtiy had "junk" infront of houses up and down every street. Being new in the area I had know idea about this put your "junk" on the curb thing. The wife said "lets drive around alittle and see what we can find." I had NO intrest in doing this, but being a good husband forced me to do so. haha.
I pulled down the 1st street we came to and at the very 1st house I see a 29gal BioCube! I slam on the breaks!! The wife flys through the windsheild lands on the hood of the car and starts yelling at me. I say bug off women I just found a free BioCube.
With blood pouring from her head I make her grab it and put it in the back seat...

Okay so thats not really how it went down.

So what happened was I spotted the BioCube and nicely stopped the car. I looked at it for a minute... Thinking there is NO way this thing works/holds water. I drive on. I get to the next block and its just bugging me. So I go back and this time I get out of the car. I look around (thinking maybe its a trap) This thing has the owners manual sitting in it unopend. It has no visable problems, so I load it up. For the next 45mins I drive around bored outta my mind o_O

I get home and can't wait to check this thing out. First thing I do is plug in the lights. GUESS WHAT???? They worked.
So now it's time to see if it holds water. I fill it all the way up. Let it sit over night and no leaks. At this point I'm stoked ;)
The only issue, know stand. I dont have anywhere to place it  Well as luck would have it this past Sunday on my way home from Seascapes, The wife notcied that Urbandale now had there "JUNK" on the curb. Riding on a high note of the BioCube we dicieded to drive around alittle and see what we can find. I came across an old cabnet that just seemed perfect for the Cube and sump setup. Only problem... won't fit in the car. People are everywhere with trucks and trailers picking up whatever they can get there hands on. So i put the car in park and drag this thing to the street. Pick up the phone and call the one person I know who will have room to haul it. NIK to the rescue... He shows up about 30mins later and looks at me like I'm crazy  But none the less he helps me out.

So last night I started on the stand. Total cost so far - $15.00 just for my paint.
I will post picks as I can. For now here is stand as I got it.
    * not sure if pictures will load. Check my album if not*

I understand, seems like most people don't like overflow boxes. I've used them for many years though with no issues. Being an acrylic tank though makes it very easy to drill for a bulkhead. Do you have a preference on the bulkhead coming out of the back of the tank or from the bottom is the first question? Next would be placement of the bulkhead, as in what area of the built in filter do you want water to drain from? I would suggest putting it in the return pump location because that will give you the first portion to use as a prefilter. You shouldn't need anything more than a 1" bulkhead and could honestly get away with 3/4" since you'll be limited on your flow rate. Referencing that video, he mentioned using an eheim pump and you could see how high the water level was in his tank. I would shoot for a 300-400 gph pump and put a valve on the output to dial in the correct amount of flow. Run your flexible tubing from the pump/valve over the back of the tank and connect to your factory return nozzle and you should be set then. It really should be pretty straight forward. Are you located in or around CR?
