I agree. If you make the whole wall darker with wood it will shrink the space. I'd try to trim it matching the cabinets.

Thanks... my challenge is going to be convincing my wife. She wants the trim to be painted a lighter color. I may try to grab some cheap trim pieces today to paint and stain and then just velcro them onto the wall to see how things look.

I'm really concerned the cinder blocks and steel I-beams aren't going to be strong enough to hold up that tank long term. :p

That is such a cool setup! I love the placement and agree with just trimming the tank the same color as the cabinets.

To clarify, the wood paneling we were looking at for the wall would be more of a lighter gray so it wouldn't look so heavy. The walls are a light gray and the granite is white with black, gray, and brown through it.

We were looking at something like like this:

But maybe that's too much going on and simple cleaner lines around the tank would look better.

In my opinion, it would be cleaner with just trim. BUT, that wood paneling may give a kind of boat/seafaring/arg! type feel. It could be cool.

So, my suggestion would be to print (if you have access to a printer) full size pages of your paneling pic and tape them to the wall. It would be really cheap to pull off and would give you an idea of what it would look like without having to buy the wood. If you're really inclined to know what it would look like...

If your wife is wanting a lighter colored trim you could get some more of the countertop stone cut and use that as your trim. That would look nice and tie all of that together. Otherwise the cabinet colored trim would be the way to go.

Thanks everyone! I stained a couple pieces of scrap wood the color of the cabinets and stuck them on the wall temporarily. It looked significantly better than the white trim that's in the rest of the house. So I got her sold on that idea.

You know, If you had just added a couple 1000 gallons to the tank volume it could have just covered the whole wall. No need for trim! Maybe not the most cost effective way to avoid trimming. Not to late!

Well I finally got the trim done. Still have to touch up the nail holes and the cabinets where we had to remove the floating shelves. My phone must have done something funny with the color balancing because the trim and the cabinets don't like this light in person.

It makes such a huge difference in person, I'm really kicking myself for not getting to this sooner. Good call everyone on going with the darker trim to match the surrounding woodwork.

Probably should have added this in here earlier.. I got the Rubbermaid swapped out with a sump a couple months ago. Sump was made from @jeremy@jeremy 's old 120g reef ready tank.

That's hilarious. The tank I want for a display eventually is what you're using for a sump!!

Heh yeah I got started in this crazy hobby 8 years ago with a 120g with those same dimensions. It seemed ridiculously huge at the time! I'm already thinking the 400g doesn't seem that big anymore!

I know that feeling, I swear my 90 is shrinking every few months.
