I was thinking about getting a 6g Fluval Edge or JBJ Nano Cube for a quarantine tank.  I don't ever plan on getting any really big fish so I was thinking the size would be ok.  The current Edge model has LED lighting and is around $105 so it sounds like a good deal.  Does anyone have any opinions or cautions on that idea?

I think it is too small. If you had a couple fish with ich or whatever then the small container might stress them out further.

I would suggest a 40 breeder with a cheap light (also under $100 total), and keep it disabled until you need it. (I only fire up my QT tank as needed.)

Makes sense. I ran to Petco over lunch and they had the Edge 6g for $90, but then I saw the opening (like 4" x 5") and started leaning towards what you mentioned. The salesperson at Seascapes said you needed to keep the QT running all the time once it was set up, but unless you were adding stuff constantly it seemed like overkill.

I see no reason to keep it up and running.

I use no sand or substrate, no rocks....just a light, heater, filter device with a filter impregnated with bacteria (I keep it in my sump all the time), and large PVC parts for hiding spots.

I'd go bigger than a 6g, You don't need anything fancy or expensive, a cheap glass tank from the $1/gal sales would suffice just fine. Depending on how much room you have, and how big of fish you are going to quarantine a 20g or even a 10g would do. Just remember the water quality in a small tank can and will go downhill faster than a larger tank.
