Josh - when did you start doing Saltwater? I just totally got out of fresh and went 'all in' with salt now.

  5. my wife fell in love with salt water after our trip to mexico and snorkeling, then wen we went to AC&C she sparked interest and asked if we could get a salt water reef style setup. i found this tank 2 weeks ago in west minneapolis for 400$ for everything, put down a 50$ paypal deposit and picked it up last saturday, i tore it down packed it up moved it home and set it up all in 18 hrs. onlything that is dirffrent is 18-20 gal of walmart RO water that i needed to top the tank off with as i couldnt get back to get some from AC&C in time.

tank was previously set up for 27 months prior to me, and jason i have been doing salt water about a week LOL

also what is the best way to get rid of the film at the top of the water? if i raise the overflow box any more it cuts off the U pipe as i did it and overflowed the tank a little LOL

Nice deal. If you have more surface agitation (Powerhead, return, etc) directed towards the overflow that will help minimize the surface film. From the pics it looks like there is very little flow at the surface.

  7. sweet thats what i was kinda thinking, i have a small power head i can slip in the corner and point at the box tonite and see what it does,

looking foward to getting to AC&C tonight and pick up a couple extra hermits and get my water checked.

  8. fed him a cube of myisis shrimp 4 hrs ago and hes all back out and relaxing in the corner of out 75 gal green tip nem. its 6"+ across easy/Portals/0/activeforums_Attach/2012-11-01_22.47.38-1.jpg/Portals/0/activeforums_Attach/2012-11-01_22.47.38-1.jpg

Your going to find out sooner or later that saltwater tanks need A LOT more flow than freshwater.

Save up your penny's cause your gonna need some bigboy pumps.

Also, the HOB filter you have running might be great for mechanical filtration but unless you keep the pad ultra clean you will find that it will eventually start stockpiling nitrates into your system. While a higher nitrate level in a freshwater system is acceptable in saltwater it promotes algae growth.

It's a good start but I think in a few months your going to run into algae problems due to lack of flow especially in the dead spots behind your rock work.

Look for pumps that have a wide flow. Tunze are my favorite.

  15. Theres nothing wrong with my maxijets i am running. And the biowheel 350 is just to break the surface tension and has no pads or carbon in it at all just a screen to keep the nems safe..

There is no deadspots behind the rockwork as there 2to 4 in off the glass and all my lights are providing adequite pars and i actually could lift the canopy a little to back them off a litle.. and the pumps get moved every couple days and are alternating ok to the best of my knowledge using the redsea wave maker.

It will always be a work in progress and we hav only lost 1 fish due to it not eating. So we are doing fine i believe and i keep the rocks dusted off pertty good on a daily basis.

I will monitor my nitrates every few days and do my water changes and keep my sump toped off to eliminate sg swingsand i am using RO water at 0tds

Josh, not trying to come across as a dick but I've been there. I had a tank just like yours 10 years ago. I've been keeping saltwater tanks since 2001. I'm telling you those MJ1200's especially with pre filters on them are not going to provide adequate flow for the amount of rock work you have in you tank. Detritus is going to settle behind your rocks as well as on top of your rocks and promote algae growth. Just give it time. There's a reason why experts suggest 10x-50x turnover rate when it comes to circulation.

If you had NO ROCKS your pumps MIGHT be adequate enough to keep detritus suspended and filtered.

IMO your tank as it is now will not last more than a few months w/o a pretty major algae bloom.

    Been there done that.

Again, IMO you don't have enough flow. It's your tank, you do what you want.

Just offering some friendly advise from a dude who had a tank just like this years ago.

  17. As we move forward we will change things around. Our emerald crabs are keeping up so far with what is present and we had some hair alge here and there and it went away in some spots and we have small patches of cyno as well here and there. And we looked at the mp40s and opted for the maxi's because of the wifes nem's. Theres a curve to salt and we are working our way thru it. Skimmer is broke in good and we have dark skimmate of 2" in a 6" cup every other day.

We will work thru it as we go. The easiest way to explain to the wife what she needs for her tank is to let her expirence it as she is a visual learner and then will understand our choices and expenses.

We talked lighting as i would like to go led and she is happy with the apperance of her VHO and halide setup. So as having a wife that is on fire so to speak for her saltwater tank is a blessing and i will watch to make shure she doesent do something horribly wrong, but i cant just tell here spend big $ on this just because other people think we should. She will need to learn the in and outs to better her husbandry and maintence.

Which shes doing good cleaning pre filters and monitoring our MTO and feeding and light schedule along with checking temps.. i am proud of her attention to detail and enthuasim

Props to your wife for catching the fever. Hence now, I tend to agree with with Waverz on this. There are people who have the experience, the been there's done that got the T-shirt, and those are the people to learn from. Experiencing it yourself is nice to but it gets expensive and frustrating when **** goes wrong, that's when you start kicking yourself in the *** and saying I should have done yada-yada-yada. I've made the same mistakes as almost anyone whose been in this hobby awhile and instead of just getting what was required/needed I went middle of the road and regretted it later. Did I learn from those mistakes, damn straight I did and so did the others who have made them. The point is to learn from our screw-ups and hopefully improve on that knowledge gained.

I quote you here "we have small patches of cyano as well here and there", flow flow flow and mo flow. Not baggin on ya or anything like that just want to see the tank thrive and U enjoy it instead of fighting it.

  19. My hands are really tied till she makes her decision. I have a smsll venture of my own that im working on but we will go from here and just keep updatin our progress and when we get new things we will share how it develops.

The maxis were a less expensive alternative we had 8 of them in various sizes. I point out to her every time we goo to AC&C what they use and how and maybee she might get something cooler than choclates this year.

Whats up Josh long time no talk. I would definitely try to talk her into more flow. Bad part about that kind of situation is the longer you wait the more the rocks soak in. Once it's there its a huge pain to get rid of, and sadly it's at that point most decide it's time to buy more pumps, give or take a month and usually people new to the hobby get so frustrated with not being able to "fix" the issue they tear down and end up leaving. I personally would love to see you guys stick around, one...cause i like you and two cause your wife likes salt water and we need more women in the hobby. But.....like Jeremy said we are just here to help it is your tank and your choice
