Well the time has come. After three years we are closing the retail store for good.

I would like to thank everyone who has ever bought anything from the store.

Right now, all dry goods are 25% off, fish will be discounted in another post.

Our last day open will be this Sunday.

We will be keeping the coral systems going for now, and I will concentrate on getting our website updated in the future.

We will be open by appointment if anyone needs any corals or anything else we have left in the store. We will still be able to order any equipment you may need. We will not be bringing any fish, or dry good items.

Thanks to Big John for all his help, and good luck to him with his new job!

    Thanks

Craig, Lisa, Dalton, Cade, Alex, Broooke

That's too bad Craig. May I ask why you have decided to close the retail store down?

Will you be selling online only or are you getting out entirely?

Not enough tanks in the area to support a store. We have never been profitable, and this summer was especially slow. I never opened it to make money, more a labor of love. But, at the end of the day, you can only loose so much money for so long.

We are going to keep the corals, and will work on getting them on our website.

    We will have no fish.

We wont stock any dry goods, but will still be able to order anything you want.

Just sent word to the wife and she's bummed (as am I). Amazing displays, thought you did a brilliant job. Definitely our favorite LFS. I hope the online approach serves you better than the open door retail.

One more thing.. Everyone should really be hit hard by this closing. A great store comes to the area.. Craig sticks out his hand to offer a great resource for fellow reefers in the area. Big John comes in and gives lots of his time to help keep things going and the hobbyists in the area cannot show up enough to support the place. I drove from Cedar Rapids as often as I could and feel bad I did not do it more.

As hobbyists it is our job to support stores like this. It is a sad day to see one close yet everyone is excited and flooding the store now to get a deal. Sad to see that a store posts a closing sale and then the place fills up. Where were all these people when it was not closing? When I was there alot of people had never been there before yet they were able to pick up and high tail it there. I really feel bad. I hope that helps Craig but honestly makes me question this area.

All we really need to be supporting the places that are trying to make it work with saltwater. We need to be supporting Pets Playhouse, Sea Of Marvels, Coralville Bay and Petland. These stores are offering dry goods and saltwater for hobbyists. Yes it costs a little more but they do not just have a big warehouse out back to stuff full of a large minimum order to be able to compete.

Davenport is very lucky.. But I hope that their is a continued support for the stores in that area so we do not lose them as well..

Sad to hear, I drove the 2.5hr trip a couple of times and was always happy, but just too far away for me! I sincerely hope online coral selling does great and becomes a lucrative labor of love.

I am really sorry to see this Craig. I wish you nothing but the best. You have always have hired club members and was always nice to walk in and see them and shoot the sh********** with them about their tanks and tanks in the region and mine. I truly will miss it. I was up there this morning with Big John at 11 lights in the front of the store where off and John was just look out the window. I knew then it was going to be a bad day for the club. As for the drive I will always support the sponsors even if its 1 hour or 2 hours THANKS

Sorry to hear. Thank you for supporting the area for 3 years. The best reeftank store in the area by far. I was fortunate that this place is only a 10-15 minute drive for me. Good luck in your future endeavors.
Also thank you Big John for your character and a job well done.

Thanks everyone I really appreciate it.

I will give you a little insight into the business that most people dont know. (just in case anyone else is thinking about opening a store)

I have been in management all my life, so I am not unused to business. The simple rule of retail is you need to double the cost of your product to be able to pay for all your other bills.

So if gadget A cost you $50, you should be able to sell it for $100.

Well of course suppliers wont give you their price list until you have an actual business and tax number.

The margins in this business is almost non existent. There are often times online retails sells products for less then I can buy them for. Big ticket items like lights, skimmers and controllers, you maybe make a 10% profit on.

There are some good stores in the area, and if you dont want them all to go under, I encourage you to support them as much as you can, especially the ones who are supportive of the club.

Remember, that pump that a store has for $125 that is online for $105, probably cost the store $100 or so.

We try and buy everything we can dry good wise from our LFS... Salt is only about a buck more than ordering online and lights are always comparable... So there are areas where you can really help when you can... Do we spend more on our dry goods? Yeah we do. That is for sure. But it helps to keep a local business up and running. And it helps to foster those individuals who work there. Having knowledge and resources available when you need this is really critical!

Amazon has the ability to put most retailers into the ground if people are willing to wait two or three days. And you literally cannot find a Hydor pump at a retail store that is going to be competitively priced. I will admit there are things that I will only buy online. But these are typically items that are marked up beyond 150% locally, And typically are not bought often.

It's hard to see a shop that is so respected close out, or at least reduce to a no bricks or motor, but it is certainly understandable why you and your family do not want to continue to bleed with little returns. All the best to you guys and I hope your online venture goes a little better!

I purchase all my salt, most all my fish, several coral, all my food, and return pump from Acc. If it was new, I bought it from there. They gave 10% GIRS discount on top of their prices. I'm stuck in Florida on vacation and completely bumbed I won't be able to stop in. I will be in need of salinity salt soon so if you are going to be placing an order by chance, put me down for bucket or two if possible.

Thanks Craig, John, and co for all you've done to educate me and the cedar valley community on all things saltwater.

So the manufacturer/distributor bases their price to the retail outlet based on units ordered? That would almost be counter productive to small businesses...

Do you really think they care about small businesses?
