I've read that some of the outlets are mechanically switched and others electronically.  I've also read that you're supposed to keep high voltage devices away from outlets 4 and 8.  Is that because these two are the mechanically switched outlets and why does this make a difference?

Well, I'm still learning it now and I'm trying to document things as I go along...so hopefully, it will be a lot easier for you than it has been for me.

Outlets 4 & 8 are supposed to be used for devices that don't draw as much power when turning on like solenoids and really small pumps. I believe they have more sensitive relays in them. If you ask me though they aren't sensitive enough as I still have problems with them controlling my small skimmer pumps and other lower wattage devices. I haven't heard about plugging in high voltage devices in them though, my guess is the the relays could fry because they are rated for a smaller load.

I did a little testing tonight and they do behave differently. If I put a K1 (pulls 4 watts) on 4 or 8, I am able to properly control it. If I put it on 1-3 or 5-7, no dice...it runs even when I tell it to turn off. So I guess it's clear...it you have low wattage things that you need to control, put them on 4 or 8 if you have problems on the other outlets.
