Acrylic in Cedar Rapids

    Hey everyone, I'm setting up a new tank and just finished the new stand. I decided to leave the front open so that I could see the sump and everything in it. The only problem with this is that I have two little kids. I'm thinking about putting a piece of acrylic on the front of the stand so that it still has the open look but doesn't allow the kids to mess with anything. Does anyone know where I could buy somewhat thick acrylic in Cedar Rapids? I'll need a piece that's at least 24" x 24". I already checked with Lowe's and Menards and neither one had one in those specs. Thanks in advance!

    Thank you! I called them this afternoon, and they only have full sheets in CR. They said they could ship a smaller piece from Chicago but I'd have to pay for shipping. I might still end up doing that though. Thanks for the recommendation!

    Full sheets are 48 x 96. I didn't ask the cost because I'm sure it's quite a bit.

    All calls go through Chicago as they have minimal staff in CR. They almost always have scrap you might just stop by and ask. What thickness do you need?

    Ok, maybe I'll try that. The guy I spoke to looked up inventory but maybe they don't inventory scraps. He said the CR shop was only showing full sheets. I'd like a piece that is around 3/8" or 1/2" thick.

    If you get toward Des Moines, I've been going to Midland Plastics, they have been super nice and some of the guys are often eager to give pointers. I have been just asking to see what they have for drop (leftovers) and they are happy to show me and let me pick out scraps. They also have an assortment of glues, tools, shapes and hardware like hinges in acrylic.

    Thank you everyone! I stopped by Sabic today, and they actually just gave me a large piece of "scrap" that worked perfect.

    Yeah acrylic shops like Sabic cut pieces for orders so customers buy the whole sheet but may only use 1/4 of it, the rest goes in the scrap bin for recycle. Show up at the right time and you can get some nice sized scrap.

    Regal in DSM used to sel scrap by the pound but they decided to stop doing that for some reason and now they just recycle it. Makes no sense. One of the many reasons I avoid that store

    I tried to get a full sheet from Regal and 6 weeks later they called me back, I had already got what I needed from Midland and had my sump built by then.
