Just want to reach out to the folks in the IC/CR area and say hello, and see how you reefers are doing? Now fall is in full swing, what projects have you been working on? Or plan to be working on?

Myself just set up a new/used 120 DD. With a 8 bulb ATI and a refuge.
    Don't be a stranger,

I'm hoping to do a 40 breeder SPS only build over the winter. Already have the tank and snaged another 40 breeder for a sump. Still working on the plan for stand and some of the equipment, but its a project in progress.

Trying to get my stand finished. I do have a question tho. A 48×24 120g true dimensions are 48 1/2×241/2. A standard cut sheet of wood is 8'×4' which is a 1/2" shy ach direction, which results in being 1/8" shy on every side. Would a 1/8" on each side make a big difference? The tank would over hang by that much, just not sure if it would make a significant effect?

My self would use a 2 big sheets on the outside and a sliver in the MIDDLE to make up the difference. Due to the fact of the pressure of the weight, could be a bad on the seams. JMO

I have taken 3- 1x4's and cut off the ends at 45 degree angles around the front three edges. Then I glued and pocket holed them to the edges of your plywood. Routered off the outside edges and finished . It then leaves you a finished edge all of the way around the front and the tanks edge cover where you glued the joints together and it leaves you with an ledge to sit things on.

Double check at the lumber yard, some manufacturers are now sending out sheets of material that actually measure 97" x49" to take into account edge damage through transit or poor handling.

I had to do this for my 75 stand. Than trim it and it would do the job.

If you are measuring a rimmed tank (Aqueon, Marineland) I wouldn't worry. The trim thickness on those tanks is usually 1/8" more so the focal point of the weight of the tank is mostly on the flat part of the rim, if you look on the bottom rim the outside corner has a round on it from the injection molding and this does nothing for distributing the weight of the tank.

But the other thing to point out is that you have a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood and your tank is 2' x 4'. Instead of cutting off a 24" wide section off one end, just cut the exact size you need from the sheet. You have enough excess material, there is no need to make a center piece like shown in the pic above.

Example of thinking it threw and not rushing, I picked up the pre made frame for the 75. Myself would have burned a sheet of plywood to make it seamless. but at the time of hurry get this done. (u see The results) untrimmed. lol

Just a hint for you (experience here) the #1 thing to make sure of is that the tank is supported by the corner. All rimmed glass tanks up to 48" long need only technically be supported by the corners, 6" from each corner in each direction to be specific (this comes from the manufacturers).

I built a stand a lot like yours (RC DIY Stand Template thread) and put the tank on it only to find out 3 days after I filled it that the corners were floating. I was so focused on the stand-floor connection (crowned floor and finished basement) that I completely neglected the tank-stand connection. I had to tear the tank down and put plywood & shims on the stand, it sucked.

Also is this for a glass rimmed tank or an acrylic tank? I guess I should have asked that

It will be for a glass rimmed tank. After lookng at my post and thinking about what i initially posted my numbers are off. So im actually 1/4" short on the ends, but front to back is good. I think instead of running a small strip in the middle i am just going to cut 3 equally pieces for under the tank, and instead of screwing them down i will just let them float so i dont have crowning issues. I think this way may work well?

Also, i am in need of 2 pieces. 48 1/2×24 1/2. Otherwise yes i would just cut what i need out of 1 sheet.

Great pointer @Turbo's Aquatics@Turbo's Aquatics! lots of people don't even don't look at directions, nor do they ask these types of questions at the time of purchase.

why 2 pieces? one sheet of 3/4" is plenty for a rimmed tank. Technically you don't even need a topper for that stand with a rimmed tank, as long as you have full contact (preferably all the way around, but just in the corners will do)

I personally would not cut multiple pieces. You want one solid piece. Otherwise inconsistencies in the top frame will be translated through the plywood, defeating the purpose of adding the plywood.

Ideally if you have one solid sheet of thick plywood on the top of the stand, when you lay it down on that (and if it is nice and flat) then you can visually see the gaps between the plywood and the frame. Fill these in with shims all around, then screw the plywood down - with the heads slightly counter-sunk, pre-drilled. This eliminates the factor of the screw head pulling the plywood down, but you don't want the head to stick up above the plywood at all once the tank is on it.

the plywood that was the go-to for a long time was Aruco brand out of Brazil, available at Home Depot or Lowes (one of the two, but not both) it was 23/34" and had 4 orange stripes on the end (ID mark) and it was super awesome because the top lamination was thick so you could cut it with a circular saw and it wouldn't chip at all, then the factory burned to the ground and I haven't seen it for a few years.
