First a disclaimer: I'm not looking to mix species. That would just be silly and my tanks are definitely not big enough for that.

But I was wondering the other day, can you add more clowns to a tank that already has an existing pair of clowns? I have a pair of tomato clowns, and was always curious if it's possible to add more tomato clowns (small ones of course). Do they get accepted into the pack? Or does the female kill them?

Second thing I was wondering about, is that I have a pair of Snowflakes (Ocellaris) in a 75g, and is it possible to add other designer Ocellaris to the same tank or do you encounter the same problem above?

Brs has a video on youtube where they had a billion <slight exaggeration> clowns in a tank they said to keep them WELL feed and that should ease some aggression.

The common thing with most all harem or more than one pair tanks is they have multiple anemone's which gives them a set territory and or keeps them preoccupied if you will. They are usually pretty large tanks also. I personally wouldn't add any more to the tomato tank if your current pair has been paired for a while... it might be a blood bath. The same thing may happen in the other tank too. Another thing to consider is when adding multiple clowns...you should add them all at the same time and they are usually/should be all the same size and from the same clutch. I'm not an expert by any means but I will say I have done a ton of reading on this in the past with the hopes of setting up a clown harem tank in the future. That's my 2 cents

That is my initial thoughts as well. The only saving grace is that the tomato tank is getting an upgrade to 90 gallons so I would be able to add 2 extra clowns at the same time as the pair. There are also about 4 or 5 anemones that would move over as well. It's one of those things that you probably shouldn't do because it's risky.

Ive got a 73g with a black ocell and orange snowflake. Had them about a year, the black ocell is pretty big probably atleast twice the size of the snowflake. Nov I added a fairly small whats believed to be a wyoming white. Probably half to a 1/3 the size of the snowflake. I know its only been a few months but havent had any problems and they act like its not there.

I had 2 small 1.5 inch snowflakes in a 90G with 1 or 2 other small fish. I later (couple months) added a larger misbar maybe 2 or 2.5 inch. It looked like the large one and one of the smaller Clowns got along better (hung out) than the third. They all got along fine for about 2 months and then one day one of the the smaller clowns started chasing the other small one all round. I put up with that for about 3 days and decided it was time to remove the one being chased before he died. I had to sell him.

Moral of the story; things may be ok for a while but things can change so you are taking your chances with having more than 2.

I have a female gold banded maroon clown that Is very very territorial. I wanted to add more clowns so I added four juvenile oceallis clowns at the same time, she bothered them for maybe a week, but I have a 100 gallon tank with a ton of Live rock for them to hide in. Its been several months and I only have two left, but that's because one jumped out and another I believe is stuck in my drain. Of the 4 I added one became a noticeably larger female while the other 3 remained smaller males. The GBM only occasionally took the opportunity to dart out at one of the clowns after the first two weeks. In the past I had a pair of GBM's and I can tell you as a pair they were so territorial there's no way you could add more clowns.

From my experience tomato clowns and maroon clowns have been the most territorial. If your going to add clowns to a tank with a mated pair, I think I would add a large number of young juveniles from the same batch to help even out the odds between small fish vs big pair. This has been my only success in regards.
