is there a problem with adding additional substrate?  over the year i have taken out subtrate that had red slime on it so i wanted to replace it.
i know i had heard that stirring up substrate can cause problems
    Thank you

If you're just going to add on top of what you have, just make sure it's rinsed thoroughly and add a little at a time to avoid too much clouding. Shouldn't be a problem.

I am not sure what technique you plan to use to add the substrate, but from person experience, using a length of pvc that reaches from the sand bed to outside of the water works really well as a sort of "funnel" to just pur the new sand right on top of the existing sand with a minimal "cloud" in your water. Best of luck!

I've considered adding substrate also. Thanks for the tip about the pvc funnel....great idea.
