I just bought a new tank recently that I have yet to set up. Its a 300 gallon 48"x30"x48" glass tank. It is drilled with a 2 inch drain on the overflow but not drilled for returns. The glass is 3/4" thick. Would I be better off trying to drill it for a couple returns or just go up and over the top? Its going to be an in wall tank so any pipes wouldn't be showing anyway but I was wondering if there are any benefits to either method.

I would go up and over for sure. One could argue that drilling a secondary drain may be a good idea.

Yeah I'd thought about that too. Problem is its so thick I don't feel comfortable doing that either. And it weighs 800 lbs so Its a little hard to just flip it on its side and do it.

you don't have to flip it on it's side to drill it out. I have drilled tanks while sitting it place. With a second person spraying a steady stream of water at the drill bit/glass it can be done.

Yep. Andy is correct that's how I drilled the holes for the closed loop on my big aggressive tank. also the thicker the glass the easier it is to drill it takes longer but the chances for it to break are less. the hardest tank I ever drilled was a 10gal.

I didn't know I could do that. So you think another 2" drain is what I need?

Depends on your return pump. I would do a beananimal style overflow if possible. I had one on a tank and it was close to silent. It requires 3 holes to be failsafe.
