Alrighty so I'm getting ready to place an order to have a custom stand and canopy made for my new 180 I purchased. I will be using the AI Vega's for my lights. I've read that many have had better spread with 4 fixtures vs 3, but my biggest question is how high are fellow members mounting their units? As I said, I'm having a canopy made custom, so therefore I get the say in how tall it is. I'm looking for some input as far as how tall people running AI's over a 6 ft tank. I appreciate it!

I have a 40 breeder with 2 ai sols that sit 12 inches above the water level.

I have two vegas over a 48X22X18. I use the EXT kit with a nine inch rail and the coverage is great. The vegas can be mounted at 4 inches and have great spread. I think you might be able to get away with three. I have mine at 5.5 inches from the water and set at 65% white and the other colors less. I saw on reef central people had the whites at 85% and some of my corals started to bleach. I left the cords on the EXT kit long until figure how high I want them. Theses lights are powerful and I wish there was a better user guide with suggestions besides trying and see what happens

I was told last weekend that the vega's are suppost to be 6 inch above the water surface. The Sol's are more like 12 inch above the water surface.

Vegas have 80 degree optics hence the better spread and ability to have them closer to the water level.

FWIW, I run 2 SOL whites over my 24" cube with all 40 degree optics and is hung ~12" above the surface.

It sounds like the optics have made them available to be closer to the water but then you just cant run them as high correct? I didnt care for the look of running my sols at low numbers so maybe ill call ai and see what theyre running.

Mine look good at 60% over. I think being closer to the water and LEDs having better coverage makes it look good. I would still like to know if people are ramping up the percentages during certain times of the day.
