Ok I'm confused. I'm struggling with green slime algae in my display, been thru a lot of threads on the subject, I've checked everything I've read about, flow, how long is the lighting on, over feeding, water changes, I've always checked water parameters which come out spot on even using 2 different brands of test kits, basically at my wits end. Here's where my confusion comes in. I checked out Buds booth at Fallfest and really dig the algae scrubber concept but isn't that the same concept as a refugium with macro algaes, calurpa, etc? I have a refugium with cheato and it grows great, is it just not enough or what? My tank would look so nice if I could only beat this damn slime algae!

Its not the same concept as I know I could be wrong. A fudge is in place for the macro algae to "eat" up the nutrients. A algae scrubber is designed to give a place for the nussiance algae to grow from what I understand. Realistically for fudges to work like they are designed to need to be a lot bigger then we have them but they still work tho. Hobbyist test kits are OK to get a general idea of what's going on but if you have algae then u have most likely some phosphates which the algae will suck up b4 your test kit will read it and not only that I say excess nutrients also.

There's always a reason for algae. It's better to figure out y u are getting so much. What's ur TDS?
I would start there. Good luck

They are both growing algae to export nutrients, so in that case they are the same concept. An algae scrubber basically creates conditions so the algae growing process is "supercharged". Tons of light, tons of water movement across the screens. More algae growth means increased uptake of the excess nutrients we are trying to get rid of. The algae grows so readily in the scrubber that "ideally" it won't grow in the display. Then you clean the screen to "export" the nutrients.

I got the L4 at fall fest, and since I was able to seed it from an established screen I had growth covering probably 90% of the screen in just one week. Now the screen is continuing to fill in and I'll probably be on a weekly cleaning cycle. That's CUPS of algae in just 7 days and from a scrubber that takes up very little space in the scheme of things.

Ok starting to make more sense now. I knew my cheato was using up nutrients but obviously there's more than it can use and I'ts getting used in the main tank also. TDS is at 0, I must be getting nutrients from the food I feed then? Man I thought I was pretty stingy when it comes to feeding. I got crabs and nassarius snails also to help with uneaten food.

What kind of nitrate and phosphate readings are you getting? Even after "fixing" the problems with feeding etc. and getting the nutrients you introduce into the tank under control the rock and sand can leach back out and feed the algae growth for quite a long time. Or the rocks and sand, depending on the source, could be the sole cause of your issues since the beginning. If you think that may be the case get some new salt water that reads 0 phosphates in a container and throw a few nice size pieces of your rock in there. If its leaching phosphates you'll be able to tell with testing after soaking them a few days.

I built myself a scrubber and it grows some turf algae, hair algae and bubble algae and a few things I don't know what they are. Not the lush carpet that Bud gets with his equipment, but I don't have any nuisance algae in my DT.

The scrubber I have (from Bud) does grow algae and imo it also keeps it from growing in my display. I am however scrapping my L2 about 2-3 times a week with the growth. I could probably use a bigger one but I doubt I have the room under the tank. I also run this with a skimmer too.

In comparison in the smaller 40br I have with no scrubber there is some cheato and I too have seen the regular algae almost outgrow the cheato. In the 40br I have a couple of macros fighting for space but hair algae is still somehow growing. my test kits all read -0- as the stuff is all sucked up by the algae growth there too!

I think the scrubber by encouraging the algae growth there with lots of light and flow is a better tool than a refugium.

Scrubber is similar to a refugium but does promote growth of a different type of macro, but essentially it maximizes the refugium concept by providing minimal water penetration for light, thin laminar flow, and once mature, a regenerating substrate

Each tank is different, and to some extent, each scrubber will grow different. If you take a tank that has gone long-term on one type of filtration and add in another, you will likely see an improvement no matter what additional piece you put in. You may also insert another dynamic that wasn't there that may cause things to change and all change has consequences. That's why you don't remove existing filtration before you add different/new, if you can.

A scrubber is good in combination with a skimmer and carbon. You attack organics and inorganics from all angles using these 3.

Regarding slime, whether that is green or red cyano, that is going to be the tough one to beat out. From what I have experienced, cyano is somewhat cyclical in nature. For instance if you move a bunch of rock or change your flow pattern, about 4-6 weeks later it's dinos or cyano for about 4 weeks no matter what you do really. So it is somewhat anecdotal to say that anything really fixes that. Long terms stability can really make a difference. But if you talking about trying to save corals through this time and preventing future possible outbreaks, a scrubber can really chop a leg out from under cyano. But it takes several weeks to get one mature to the point where it can do battle if you've got tough cyano. That being said I have had customers put one on and get good algae growth within 7-10 days and the get more immediate tank results.

If you chaeto is still growing OK, then you should, hypothetically, be able to get good scrubber growth. One way to test it: build a quick and dirty DIY one.

Wow Bud you hit it on the head. I just switched everything from my 125 to 75 the Friday before Fallfest. Rearranging the rocks and such the green slime is growing on all the white sides of the rocks that werent visible in the 125. I'm going to stick with my routine water changes and see if it will calm down if not I'll be contacting you for one of those scrubbers. I'm going to Blackxrunners house tonight to pick up a tank and I'm gonna check out his L4 he got from you.

yep, that's classic bacterial die-off. Same can happen in an established tank just by changing an established flow pattern. That's why planning ahead is so important, then leaving things alone instead of constantly re-arranging. But that's hard to do /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

Bud, are you saying things will settle back in over time and the slime algae will eventually go away? I am noticing chunks of it peeling of the rocks and floating to the top. Thanks for everyone's help. I feel like I will get this under control.

Possibly. I'd try manual removal and make sure things are set up the way they will be for good

this is awesome stuff, looks like im getting a scrubber when i do a bigger tank. Dont mean to thread jack kel but what sizes are there for scrubbers?... is there a set size for set sizes of tanks?

You need to ask Bud those questions.

It's really based on a combination of feeding and tank size. It used to be completely based on feeding but then the guideline was modified to be more centered around how much you feed, but when you get to a certain size of tank then you really need to stretch the size a bit IMO no matter how much you feed.

Yeah sorry that question was directed towards Bud. So basically all models are based on feeding and the smallest is a given amount of food and then each model higher equals more food and I would assume it would be each day?

Don't go there if you want advice from me. I got banned and a large portion of my threads got deleted. I guess the admin preferred to not have people questioning his product logic while offering another option.
