I'm realizing just how difficult it can be to achieve complete overflow silence without the Herbie. I have the proper Herbie setup on my 30, but my 29 and my 10 only have one hole drilled in back. So back in the day when I used to have a freshwater tank I used a siphon to "vacuum" my gravel. The hose siphoned water through a tube that went over the edge and down to a bucket. My question is this: ""Can I fashion the Herbie to work by using the drilled hole as the "emergency" and an over the top siphoning tube with a valve to make it into a Herbie?""

I not 100% clear on what you had i mind, but you do not want to just take a regular tube and run it over the top and have it as a siphon. Reason being WHEN the siphon breaks at some point, and it will, there is no way for it to restart on its own. You will just end up pumping out the sump, and if the emergency drain can't handle all the flow you will have an overflow situation.
Now there is some overflow configurations that *should* be a little safer as far as restarting a siphon, but still not 100% guaranteed. If its an option drilling another hole would be the best. If not then I would look into an actual over the top overflow designed to work on aquariums.

He had a hole that handles flow, he wants to suoolament it with an over tge top partial siphon which is doable as when siphon is lost duri g an I utage the initial bole wil work to removw thw water being pumped in. The siphon is going to be used as a silent overflow withbpartial siphon. End result os a single hole herbie stylenoverflow.

With the main overflow being the over the back the secondary elbow from the bulkhead will serve as the emergency side. Which should work just fine.

For anybody who may wonder, this setup works amazing! Wow! It took some ingenuity to get started (I stuck a tube between my return and the over the back siphon) but once it got going, it's awesome!
