When I feed one of my clowns always grabs some food and swims it over to her anemone and spits it out to feed the anemone? Is this normal ?

I've heard of it before. I don't know how common it is in reef tanks though. A very cool example of the symbiotic relationship between clowns and their nems.

So do you think that the clown fish is feeding the anemone or is it trying to save a piece for later knowing no other fish is going to go get he food out of the anemone?

This is not that uncommon. A lot of times this behavior is not as seen as much in a tank because a lot of our clowns are tank raised so they do not display the behavior as much as they do in the wild. It is common though. When I have clowns that feed my anemones, I do not do supplemental feeding for them.

I am sure clowns feed their anemones. I just know what pigs my clown fish are and I see them with a big chunk of fish that is going to take a while to eat and I see them watching other fish going after and eating smaller chunks and they will sometimes drop the big piece they have and go after smaller floating stuff and then go back to what they put down. You know they know where they put it because they will immediately go over for it if another fish starts checking it out. Very competitive guys for food!

I just saw my clown doing it for the first time yesterday. He grabbed a piece of clam I fed that was too big to gulp down and went over to the anemone and eventually spit it out right onto the nems mouth after he had munched on it for a little while.
