One bad out of the box. Two shot stray voltage. My Ebo is 10+ years old and still precise.

I'm with you man...100% Ebo now...although I did have two of them fail on me. They were replaced via warranty for free.

I've been using Via Aqua Heaters with the controllers on them, and these things are spot on and very nice.

just an fyi, I recently got the Fluval E300
    http://www.aquacave.com/hagen-fluval-e-300-watt-br-electronic-aquarium-heater-2719.html

Totally awesome and worth the money.. it's got 2 temp sensors located separate from the heating section of the unit, so it's water and not the air in the tube it measures..
Gotta love the digital readout too for a temp, the clicky makes it real nice for setting the temp in .5 increments..

    /shrug thought I would share that /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif

It's too bad. I really like the look of the solid black plastic heaters, especially for freshwater tanks where the heater is typically in the tank. Sucks that they have to be such a poor quality product.

I had many problems with the old style with the red knob - are these same problems happening with the newer model with the knob that lights up?

mary, which one, the lighted knob or the red knob? I bought one a short while back with the lighted knob; and have not had any problems.... yet. It has been running for a month or better.
