    I wired my house so I know enough to be dangerous, but I need some technical help if anyone can help.

    Putting in a heat pump. It is approx 70 ft from the breaker box. It calls for a 60A breaker & pulls approx 5500 watts when in use. For power requirements is says 240V 1 ph 60HZ.

    What guage wire do I need? I was thinking 6, but I dont know what my voltage drop will be in a line that long.

    Has a basic 2 wire hook up with a ground. Instead of running a ground all the way back to the box, can I bury a grounding rod & ground to that? It is outside BTW.

    6 will work fine as a general rule voltage drop doesn't come into effect until like 150-200 ft. and the only thing is that if your going outside you need to use the rated wire its call UF or direct burial wire. other than that shouldn't be bad at all. if you have anymore questions or problems let me know.
