Apex / Dyndns I`m not sure what to do.

I believe if you have a router that supports dyndns then you wouldn't need the program on the PC and it wouldn't have to be up all the time. I'm sure someone else will know for sure on this.

 

Ive heard that you sign up for that ip service, set your host name, then cancel it, and you still get to keep the host name, without having to pay for it. Does that make any sense? I hope so, cuz I'm not a genius on this topic. My buddy just did it to his, and he's stopping over today to do it to mine.

 

I have that now after they switched my address 3 times in a couple of weeks. Jeremiah set mine up (lehrjet) and I don't know much about it, except it's a really cheap way to get rid of the frustration and I haven't had problems since then. The free part is for a month, I think. I think it's on the router or something; it's not something I see on the computer. Sorry I'm not a lot of help, but I do know it's a good thing!!

 

Wavers is the one who told me to cancel it so you don't have to pay for it. So if anyone knows more info about it, it's him. I trust him so that's the route my buddy went, and the route I'm going as well.
If your really buggin out about them canceling it, just pay for it then. But from what I've been told its not necessary

 

1.  Last time I checked, you could have one free hostname at dyndns.  The only catch is you have to renew it every month.  So if you don't want to hassle with the monthly thing then paying for it might be worth it.
2.  Yes or a router that supports it.
3.  Leave a computer running.

 

I just did this about two months or so ago. Signup for account at dyndns - you get a free 30 day trial. Prior to end of the free trial, cancel your 'subscription'. In doing so, you are still able to keep 1 host name. It was confusing for me at first but Waverz helped me through it and I haven't looked back since. There is also another program to install on your computer once you sign up for dyndns. It automatically updates your IP to the server so you don't have to do anything. I now access my apex at home and at work and never have to worry about random ip address changes.

 

Last time I tried to help someone set up DynDNS, I found that they have done an excellent job of hiding the free options. As Jason mentioned, there's still a free service, but it's tough to find and you may need to sign up for the 30 day trial, then cancel, to be able to see the free option.
