I am getting a new apex on thurs. I am reading the unofficial guide in preparation for it.
The home network/email/port forwarding/web server/etc...... I don't really know much about this stuff. And the guide is scaring the crap out of me. I have apple computers and zero experience programming. I'm not a gamer so I haven't done any bridging, port opening, etc. so I don't have any of that knowledge to fall back on.
The only networking experience I have really is how to torrent and steal/share music online. My bittorrent program did all the port opening etc for me. And I guess I managed to set up a wireless network in my house at some point but I am sure I had no idea what I was doing when I was doing it and got lucky. Oh yeah and one time I figured out on my own that my RK2 could not communicate with my pc because my ethernet cables were crossover cables (or something). And I fixed it.
So....when it comes time to set up the apex on my home network, with an apple computer and router.......am I going to be able to figure it out? Will I be able to dial this in with my imac or not? Or should I just have a friend that knows PC's come over with a laptop and make it happen? That is the questions I have.
    Thanks.

I don't have an apex but I do have an apple airport and computer. From what I understand the apex has a built in webserver so you just need to do the port forwarding for outside access (like logging in from work) for your internal computers, those plugged in to the router, you would only have to enter the ip address for the apex in safari. I would also guess it would be easier if you used a free service link DYNDNS. The DNS service will give you a web address to use so when your IP changes you can still find your apex easy. (http://www.dyndns.com/) IMO the airport router is very easy to work with, hope that helps..

you don't need all that port forwarding stuff unless you want to access it from the outside world. if you just want internal access it works without any fuss. you can even still send email alerts. your mac will not be a problem.

I'm a retired network engineer. I'm also a certified Macintosh repairman. I have an Apex.

You are about an hour and a half from me, which makes it an afternoons trip.

I have some opinions about the Apex, but having set one up recently, I can help you through the setup and programing, as well as external web access and all that rot.

The airport is way massive cool and I can configure one in about 10 min.....but I *strongly* recommend you run a hard wire connection to your apex. It just makes life a lot simpler.

If you insist tho, I can steer you towards the right $100 or so of stuff you need to make wireless happen. It depends a bit on what you have at home...and it would be best we run a wire *first*, I'll letcha know what you need for wireless after I can see what you have now.

You can PM me for questions, and I can figure out a day to come visit pretty easy. Toss me frags= gas money for live in person stuff /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif. Feed me a home cooked meal and get Priority Service for Life.

Note: I did this kind of stuff for more years than I can remember. To a GIRS member, I'll go over basic networking, Apex set up, and anything else I've stuffed in my head over the years for the cost of asking. I'll travel for good Karma or frags /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif.
