Received this via the Contact Us link today:

    -------------

    Hello,

I got your contact info off of your aquarium club's website. My name is Sam May. I am a University of Miami student studying Marine Science and Biology. I was also the 2014 MASNA Scholarship Recipient.

I am doing a research project to compile a database / website with all of the relevant US aquarium laws sorted by states and territories.

I was wondering if you might be able to take a few minutes to help me out by telling me a little about any relevant laws you know about pertaining to your state. The scope of the project is rather large and I could use the help. Specifically I am looking for the following:
    Any restricted species
    Relevant news articles
Relevant blog links or other articles
Government websites with relevant laws on any aquarium-relevant animals (Fish, Inverts, Amphibians, Aquatic Plants, etc.)
Any information you could give me would be a great help!

Thank you very much for your input. And, if you know anyone else who may also be able to help out, please feel free to forward this email to them.

I look forward to speaking with you,
    ~Sam

Anyone out there familiar with Iowa Law as it relates to aquariums?

I know the alligator snapping turtle is prohibited but that's all I can think of immediately. I have Westlaw access so I will see if I can find something. I imagine there are some administrative rules promulgated by the DNR but last I remember I think it just cites to the federal restrictions.

If he googles IA ADC 571-77.1(481B) that pretty much covers it for Iowa. This link goes to a PDF with the text of the rule.

And here is the link to the Code of Fed regulations the Iowa rule cites to.

Also it appears I was wrong. The alligator snapper isnt listed anywhere as endangered or threatened that I see so maybe that is allowed now. I know it was threatened at some point.

    https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/code/2015/481A.47.pdf

Here in the code the cover importing fish to the State. Most of the DNR laws and Dept. of Ag laws deal with captive breeding of deer and fur bearing animals. This is to protect the resources from being expolted for commrecial reasons. As for the aquarium trade that is mostly covered by the Fed regs. The DNR would mostly be concerned with the releasing of non native species that would out compete native species ie Dragonhead fish, Carp, and so on.

So why send out a survey to clubs when he could have easily gained the same access to Westlaw at a University?

Westlaw has state law databases yes. Those can usually be found with google though anyway. The administrative rules are what can be difficult to find. I searched basically all legal materials in Iowa and what I posted was all I found relevant in about 30 min of searching. I was surprised at the number of criminal cases that include one of the keywords I used "aquarium". Almost all of them involved a meth lab somehow hah.\

"The driver, Violet Mitchell (Mitchell's aunt), stated Mitchell had asked her and the other passenger of the vehicle, Pam Goemaat, to purchase some of the items. Mitchell told an officer he was building an aquarium at home. Mitchell was charged with conspiracy to manufacture a controlled substance (methamphetamine), in violation of..." Mitchell v. State 838 N.W.2d 680 (Table) Iowa App.,2013.

"Candis contends the court acted inequitably in failing to consider the value of the property awarded to Arthur and in failing to equalize the property distribution. Candis specifically contends Arthur squandered marital assets by purchasing a host of unnecessary items such as twenty aquariums and sixty-four pornography tapes."
    In re Marriage of Stark
    Not Reported in N.W.2d, 2000 WL 328079
    Iowa App.,2000.

"Defendant next claims counsel was ineffective for failing to object when a police officer testified that when they moved the body of the victim there was a pungent odor of blood and the victim's pet iguana suddenly crashed through the top of the aquarium and raced toward the victim's body. While we agree with the defendant the evidence was not relevant, defendant has failed to show prejudice resulted to a level that influenced the verdict. This ineffective assistance claim is without merit."
    State v. Bennett

Ok so these cases have no relevance but I laughed.
