k so running your RO unit in short bursts is bad. so how do i setup my floats and stuff to let my RO resevoir drain down enough before it starts filling back up so it will run for a few hours instead of 10 minutes here and there???

What all does your RO feed to(top off, kalk reactors, storage tank...)? I'm asking this because you could get a bigger container for just RO storage, then have a smaller container with a feed line to top off and such. This way when you take 5, 10, 15.... gallons from the RO storage tank it will get replaced with larger amounts at a time(run longer). Does this make any sense?

I put a valve on my RODI holding tank. When its full I turn off the valve. When it gets near empty i turn it on.

Well the idea was using a ten gallon holding tank for Top off. with RO unit running into that, then from that tank to the sump. I wasnt planning on having a HUGE RO storage mainly a Salt water storage tank for water changes.

the only reason i have heard about short bursts being bad is cause you get a spike of TDS with short burts. you still get the spike no matter but if you run 10g then that will displace more of the TDS than just 1 gallon. thats the main idea behind it.

Another thing that you can do is get a selenoid to use in conjunction to a float valve and put the selenoid on a timer so that it runs for a couple hours a day or until the float valve turns it off. That way it can be fully automated and you don't need to worry about turning it on and off....but if you're around your holding tank all the time and don't mind the manual, that's a great option too and cheaper.

I've heard running it in short bursts reduces the lifespan of the membrane.  I'm sure you could find more specifics on the FAQ page on the Air, Water, Ice site.

    From the AWI page:

Each time you short cycle, the RO system feeds your DI cartridge much lower quality water than when your RO system is up and running. The lower quality water shortens DI resin life. If your system is pump driven then you risk ruining the pumps and hammering the system to death, on/off/on/off 24 hours per day 7 days per week. Eventually causing fittings and pumps to fail or burst.

Chris I think they are over $100, I read the same thing about short burst. I also filled my tank and re-filled when it was getting low. I bought a BRS DI resin chamber, and BRS neuclear DI resin. It has been in use for 4-5 months and holding a TDS of 0 as of last night! There is only about 10% of the blue left in the DI resin so I expect to change it out pretty soon. Either way $10-12 every 5-6 months is pretty cheap. I fill up a dedicated container weekley for my top off. I still use short burst of RODI and every once n a while have a drink or wash my hands off(to lazyfor all of the stairsLOL) Seems to work well and 0 tds...
