I have limited space with the aquarium, but I desperately need an ATO. My issue is finding space for the reserve. I am hoping to put a 10 gallon ato reserve tank on top of my canopy. Do you suppose that is just too much weight to have on a canopy?

I would assume that she's talking about pouring water into it while in place...just using it as a reservoir. Also assuming that you're planning on using the height as a gravity feed on a float valve?

i have a float valve, but everyone tells me to do gravity fed and put it on canopy. im not a super handy gal, so, when is comes to mechanics, i do what people tell me to do. But, this makes me nervous.

You can buy some steel shelf mounts and put a shelf on the wall. As long as the shelf brackets are screwed into the studs with substantial screws or lag bolts - probably 3" or so - you should be fine. Personally, I would feel more confident doing that than putting it directly on the canopy.

Jason Glaspie, you have a lot of history with carpentry and all, what do you say?

I have mine mounted off to the side of the tank with 3 shelf brackets , mounted into studs with a piece of plywood (3/4") for the container to sit on. Honestly you looking at 80 lbs which I think is the rating on each of the shelf brackets. Get heavy gauge screws and you'll be fine.

just to clarify when you get those brackets then should be around an 1/8" thick and form the shape of a triangle, if you get the cheapo l shaped ones bad things will happen

Another option would be mounting the float valve in your sump plumbed directly to your RODI unit along with a solenoid on a timer. The solenoid would be used as added protection in case the float were to ever stick and would eliminate the need for a reservoir. If you use a controller of some sort you can of course have the solenoid hooked to that and set to only run a few minutes a day or whatever is needed.

It's a fairly flood proof solution and there is no need for a reservoir.

Well, my rodi unit is only about 6 feet from the tank. the rodi holding tank is around 30-35 gallons.... it may be kinda tacky, but can i run a line from the rodi unit holding tank to the sump?

Of course you can, you just need a few 1/4" fittings and some 1/4" tubing.  You would just need to be sure that the hole in the holding tank going to your sump is higher than your float valve.  Another option would be instead of using a float valve use a float switch that runs to a small pump like an aqualifter.  When the water level in your sump gets low the float switch turns on the pump and pumps water from your reservoir to your sump, once the water is at the appropriate level the switch floats up and shuts off the pump.  Easy peasy...
Check into www.autotopoff.com for some float switches, they have great customer service and great products.
If your worried about it looking tacky you could always hide the 1/4" waterline behind the baseboard or something.

Hey Rockinsmall, i created my own ATO and if i can do it you can! my RODI unit is in the kitchen and my tank in living room. Drilled a hole in the wall and ran 1/4' tubing through the wall. i purchased an auto topoff conroller from autopoff.com as well as float valve. Very simple to set up. Where are you located?

xmasia... ohhh golly.. u know me so well...

I'm in Council Tucky... theres a lot of really great folks over here that have said they'd do the work for me. After all, the DIY seems to be what the guys like best! I will have to get to Menards and buy some stuff. I'm sure somebody will end helping me.. i mean, doing it for me... but i intend to fully watch and try to help, so i don't seem so useless! Being self sufficient with this sort of thing is a goal of mine. Perhaps this is just the project for me to try!!!!!

I sure hope Psychic Suzanna was talkin about my toilet!
