I don't know how it happened (LARS) but I got a bryopsis outbreak this summer. It got pretty bad but over the last few weeks I have been able to eradicate 95% of it by manual extraction, etc.

I am starting to see it come back a little and I am looking for advice on how to deal with it.

I am an experienced reefer and know that I should reduce the light cycles, cut back on food, run GFO....I am doing all that. I also know about using Kent Tech M or whatever but I am not going that route....yet.

I ordered a bottle of Alage X on Maureens recommendation. I don't have high hopes for it really but I am willing to give it a try.

However, before I start treating with that stuff, I want to manually inject hydrogen peroxide in the remaining trouble areas on rocks. If you have any experience with this please post below.

    Q's:
    1. Will I be OK using the store staple 3% or do I need to up my game to 35%?
    2. Can I do this in the tank or do I have to remove rocks?

I have not had any luck when I tried it, but others I know say they have.

They used the standard store stuff, and used it in tank with corals & fish.

Personally I have always liked the tech M route, just takes awhile.

I'm fighting Bryopsis as well - good luck!

Would you be willing to conduct an experiment for the betterment of science, mankind, and GIRS?

I am currently using Tech M exclusively. In my thread I had some very positive results posted regarding the use of hydrogen peroxide.

Would you be willing to give the H2o2 a shot, and we can compare results? I have only 48hrs advantage on you at this point regarding the start of my dosage.

Umm I am going to try H202 I'll let everyone know what happens but as far as using the scientific method and documenting with pictures and descriptions...no I am not willing to do that.

I got rid of mine dipping entire pieces in 40/60 hydrogen peroxide/tank water. left them sit for 10-15 minutes. If corals were attached they weren't happy for a day or so but they recovered. even dipped bryopsis covered acans and they were fine. might get air bubbles in them but they eventually get expelled. never tried the injecting over an area directly in the tank though.

I've used H2O2 with success. I used two things. First if I could remove the rock I soaked it in H202 for about 5-10 minutes then replaced in the tank. Second was for spots I couldn't remove, I took the syringes that come in test kits (like 4ml?) and used that to spray the area with H202 this was in a large tank so I wasn't worried about irritating coral. When the byropsis turns white, then everything seemed to eat it. hope that helps.

My post was half joking :) I'm not interested in strict measures and controls - I don't even do that with my tanks. But photo comparisons would be nice!

All of the methods you have listed might work. Some bryopsis is killed my the Kent Marine Tech-m others are not. From what I have read, there are more than one strain of bryopsis. Manually remove as much of it out of your tank before using any product in your tank.

I clean all of my frag plugs and sometimes the frags themselves with 3% hydrogen peroxide before putting anything in my tank. I want to try and eliminate the risk of getting it again as much as possible.

I've got my own battle started against purple hair algae. I scrubbed the rock it was on today and squirted the area it was growing on with h2o2. Hopefully that stopped it.

I've battled bryopsis in my cube tank. I've tried all the methods listed above with varying degrees of success. First Tech-M magnesium. Bryopsis went away then came back, though not as aggressive as it was before, and it seemed like I was constantly trying to remove some every few weeks.

I tried to get the Algae-X listed above, but it was out of stock in the U.S for 6-9 months. So, finally I resorted to removing the rocks and scrubbing with hydrogen peroxide. That worked quite well (I think that was about March of last year).

Last summer the Algae-X was finally in stock and I bought a bottle. I did one round of dosing (August last year). That helped get most of what had popped back up after using hydrogen peroxide.

I still have to watch out for it (I like a clean tank) and attack it when a few stray strands show up here and there. Sometimes I take the rock out, if I can. Also Maureen has suggested treating it (when small) with some boiling water directly on it in the tank. The boiling water cooks it and then the CUC sometimes eats it. Also, I still have about 1/2 gallon of Tech-M magnesium left. So I just keep that around and when the cube tank needs magnesium, that's the one I dose with (I use the BRS magnesium on my other tanks that have never had bryopsis).
