Just got a nice article from Bulk Reef Supply about battery powered air pumps. Seems like a good and relatively inexpensive option to provide a bit of a fail safe option to save the inhabitants of the tank in the case of a power loss lasting more than just a couple of hours.

I'm curious to hear if anyone has them and their thoughts?????

I have 3 of them. For a pico or 10g tank that is without electricity for a short time, they can help. So will inverting a large plastic cup, lowering under water and turning upright. It will release the trapped air and send a large bubble/ ripple/surface movement. IMO but a generator. In our climate, they are pretty much a necessity. You would need alot of air pumps to cover your 3 tanks.

Don't get me wrong, the battery operated ones are fine when you are transporting (like back from MACNA (lol) for several hours/staying overnight . Typically the batteries don't last very long (maybe 8 hours?). Power outages caused from storms typically can last fora day or more.

Thanks. I'll probably get 3-4 of them. We've been in our current house for almost 25 years and while we've lost power a few times, it has never been for days at a time. Not sure its ever been more than 3-4 hours. But given the amount of corals & fish I have, its time to play it a bit safer....

I have one but not from bulk reef supply. I got mine at a fishing bait and tackle store several years ago. I have only used it a few times but as stated above batteries dont last long. Mine typically last 8-10 hours. I think they are worth it for just in case.

I bave a couple of them too but more for fishing or transport if longer travel time.

Honestly, the better tool for power outages is a generator so you can run your return pumps and heaters etc.
