I do water changes every other week in my 180. I currently use Reef Crystals from instant ocean to mix up fresh SW. I keep my calc around 450, mag around 1500, and alk around 11.
My parameters over the last 3 weeks have been calc 500+ Mag 1500+, alk 11. I'm not dosing anything, but why are my parameters going through the roof? This has gotta be from the salt, is there another salt I should try that would help balance my params from water changes from now on?

IS your salinity high? What are you checking it with?

If you want to check salinity with a refractometer and don't have one, I have one. Just let me know.

I think reef crystals is pretty high in the big 3. Maybe try just plain instant Ocean salt. Or get some more hard corals in there.

You have to mix RC more than they recommend to get salinity over 29, which raises everything else. I calculated that you need to add 3 cups per 5g instead of 2.5 which is 20% more to get to salinity 34ppt. Try substituting 1 cup of regular IO for one of the cups of RC. You may have to test the mix on 5 or 10g to make sure you have it right before mixing up a huge batch though. Let it mix for 24 hours and then test.

Many people here use Reef Crystals or IO. I use Red Sea. There can be several possible reasons for the increasing CA....the RC wasn't mixed well enough before you made the makeup water, IO made a batch with higher CA (test your next makeup water before using), your refractometer may be calibrated wrong(What calibration solution are you using?...have someone test your water's salinity), your CA test may be off (did you retest, have someone else test)...things like that could be causes as well as the corals, coralline may not be using it quick enough... I would check the makeup water(salinity & CA), the refract/calibration solution, and the test kit. I'm curious to know why you keep the Mag and Alk so high?

I do 25% water change with reef crystals every week and my mag will never go over 1350 and I dose for alk and calcium cause the RC can't keep up. Your're not using an API test are you I use Salifert for everything.  Never had a problem in 5 years with reef crystals.

I use Salifert For everything. The last two water changes were Emergency WC because I had an ammonia spike of .25. I mixed my makeup water for only 3 hrs before adding to tank.
I would like to keep my Parameters at 450 calc, 1350-1400 mag, and around 8-10 for alk. I can't tell you the last time I dosed ANY of those 3. All I use is RC.... hm..?

I used the calibration solution that came with it.. The last time I calibrated it, or checked it was with my RO/DI water after filter changes and DI change. So i used that water of 0 tds/ppt to calibrate the refractometer. When i used that water, I read ZERO on the refractometer.. or 1. which ever way you look at it, the water was pure... this ok?

Are you putting the tip on the seringe before you suck up the liquid?
I don't believe it would be this high, maybe just a testing error? The alkalinity should go down everyday so in two weeks it should go from like 11 to 9 or 8 even. The alkalinity comes with a self check instead of using saltwater use the includes liquid in the kit so you know your testing right, no offence. I was testing wrong for a long time by not putting the tip on untill after i sucked up the liquid

Yea, I use the tip on the syringe. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gif I havent used the self check fluid that comes with the Salifert Alkalinity kit. I will have to do that. But honestly, i havent dosed alk calc or mag for months... Since November to be exact.. but there has been 4 water changes in there as well. 180 gallon tank, stocked pretty light right now, as far as corals..

I used the check solution that came with the alk salient kit. Supposed to be 6.7 dKH, and the kit reads 8.9. Big difference! Time to order new kits
