Does anyone here use biopellets? I have been doing vodka dosing with my 75 - no corals, some maxi minis, but pretty much a fish display, but I am not home enough for daily dosing. Vodka has worked well in reducing nitrates, I have a large tuskfish that destroys clean up crews and a yellowhead moray that picks off small fish - so I can't have much of a clean up crew. I recently added two large green brittle stars that the tuskfish leaves alone and a longspine urchin that are doing well.

Anyway I bought a phosban reactor that I am going to modify with a funnel to run biopellets, I am also going to modify the chamber output with fewer ports to increase water velocity while allowing for a lower flow. I am hoping that (eventually) will eliminate the need for vodka dosing. I did quit dosing for a few weeks and had a HUGE hair algea breakout, so moved back to daily dosing. I know some people have gone to fast with biopellets and had bad reactions, so I am planning on going slow - but most of those are in full on reef tanks that really were fine to start with. I know the nitrates will be reduced faster than phospates, but I run chemipure elite that has gfo for those. Anyone used them?

I've done the funnel mod, works great. I've ran BP's for almost 2 years with good results as far as nitrates. I still use a small amount of gfo.

    Update:

So when doing some cleaning today I decided to test nitrates. In the past the nitrates were off the chart, even using the high range. So I tested my biocube and it was around 5-10ppm (higher than normal) but the real shock was my 75gal with the bioplastics. Undetectable!! I even did the test twice more - still nada. I am pretty shocked. I did vodka for a while, but it didn't work this well. My CPR skimmer was pulling tons from the water, so I put the cup up a little higher to concentrate the "goo" a bit better. I really didn't think it would work this well, it's quite exciting for me as nitrates have been such a pain in that tank.
