Anybody know much about Boone, IA? Looking at a couple cute places there. Wouldn't be too far of a drive to campus, and I have an SUV for winter driving. Just curious if anyone knew more about the town/atmosphere. Looking for a quite yet not completely remote place to spend the next 4-5 years. Thanks /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/smile.gifKylie
With the amount of hours you will be spending at school, at least initially, I would recommend staying in town. The Cyride is amazing and will take you from your doorstep to the vet school if you find the right place. Just a suggestion, and congrats by the way. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif As far as Boone itself, I have heard mixed statements from locals. I will regrain from saying more as I don't want to potentially offend anyone. Myself, not being a local, I don;t know much (anything) about it, except that I have been down there for frags a few times.
My gand mother lives there and seems to love it. it seems like a really nice town when i go and visit. Just my 2 cents.
I wouldn't recommend school in Ames and living in Boone, there is a lot to be said about being less than 15-20 minutes from home at the end of the day. Some people do it or vise versa, but seems like a lot of hassle to me. There is some decent duplex housing in NW Ames.
Campus living is nice. I complain about the commute from campus to my apartment in west Ames! Rent isn't all that expensive either. I'm just under 300 a month including utilities. I know a quite a few people whole live in Ames and commute to dmacc in boone. So its doable I guess
I did grad school a walking distance from campus...gas prices were far less back then, but I saved a lot.
I lived in the trailer park next to the vet college when I was at ISU and was surrounded by vet students - walking distance to the vet college & cy ride....
Ok thanks everyone. I know its early but I'm having trouble finding places in Ames that'll allow three pets and two large aquariums and sublease in June or July. There are a few places in Boone and a place in Huxley that I'm going to see on Sunday. I've heard from some post-vet students that they didn't mind the commute but I'll just have to see how long the drive seems when we get there. As for the trailers, not sure a trailer bottom can hold two 90g aquariums without any extra supports and I don't have the savings to buy a trailer anyway. Thanks again for all the tips. Keep em coming if you have anything else to say /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif
The pet part is tough. I went throught it looking here in ames. There is one landlord who specializes in pet properties. His name is lad grove. His lists are petallowed.com Ironically there is an opening in my building. But he has many others. He is an easy guy to work with. I wouldn't worry about mentioning the tanks. Just the pets. Sometimeshe is picky about subleases but I can put in a good word for you
That would be awesome! I've already filled out an application and emailed it to them but haven't gotten a response yet. I would be looking for a 2br that allows the three cats and a move in date of about July 1st. Possibly June if it was absolutely necessary but I'd rather save that months worth of rent. Thanks so much!
I just sent another email to them asking about a 2br on delaware and a 3br on 11th. Both are available starting this summer. Are either in your complex? If so, those are the two I'm interested in that are offered by Lad Grove.
i dont know about the one in my complex being a 3 bedroom. mine are only 2. they are call tamarack apartments located on 11th and Burnett. there is still a sign out front that says apt available. i think my rent is like 725 plus utilities. but he pays for cable/internet and water (its included in your rent already). but when you break it down to the sq ft its one of the better deals in town. its on the east side of town but the cyride run all the time this way so it shouldnt be a problem.
We live in the hickory ridge apartments in west Ames. We aren't supposed to have a fish tank larger than 10g... But I missed that memo /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/wink.gif (we do live ground level so that helps with tanks I am sure). We also have three large snakes and two dogs. Rent in a 2 bedroom is about $750. On top of that we pay for electric. If you need a garage, those Att in price depending if you go with one that has an electric opener or not. This is our fourth year here and have been pretty happy. My only complaint is the laundry dryers often go out in the building costing double the cash to get a single load fully dried.
Yea, i'm in west ames in Braun properties. I pay 960+utilities a month for rent for a 4 bedroom. but it ends up being just under 300 a person. No rules on tanks either, lol. All the owner said was no keggers.
I grew up and went to school in Ames and I now live in Boone as you know (North of Boone really). Also, my mother and her family are from Boone. If you are in High School there used to be rivalry that could get sort of heated. Booners didn't really like the Ames preps much. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif But as adults its a pretty nice community. There are several straight shots to Ames from Boone on highways depending on where in Boone you are, all will lead you to campus. Living in Boone and commuting to Ames is very popular for many reasons. There also used to be a bar in Boone that catered to ISU students. I used to come over quite often. I have heard they started doing it again.
