Brown alge on new rocks

  1. I placed a few new pieces of dryed rock in my tank, Ive noticed they are getting brown alge as everything else is fine. Tested water all good, even did an etra water change. any thoughts.?

    Pretty common from what I have seen.

    A lot of people will "cycle" new rock outside of the tank. This also allows the rock to leach out anything like excess phosphates so they aren't added to the system. Adding larger amounts could cause issues with excess nutrients, phosphates is a big one you usually hear about, but if you aren't seeing anything like that I'm sure you're fine. It's just going through the normal maturing process I would reckon. Put it in a high flow area and keep it blown off and the brown algae phase should go by pretty quick in an established system.

    That grown algae is likely diatoms, which are some of the fastest colonizing organisms present in our tanks :) Similar to how new tanks get set up and get a gold dust covering on almost everything for a few days, if you add new dry rock to your tank this same thing can happen. it should be covered in coralline in no time :)
