Got some of this because I was tired of all the fines from their large particle lignite. Planned to use it today. Wow, what a different product. I want to use it in my two little fishes reactor. Will it work???? Who has used it??? The particles are so small, that the sponge filter on the reactor is not stopping them - they are passing thru. Am I doing something wrong?? I ran water thru the pump and filled the canister. The top sponge is completely filled with the carbon particles. Didn't seem right. I'm afraid to run it on my tank.

Have you tried slowing down the flow through the reactor?

Yup. Tried that. Didn't make a difference

Try cutting a small piece of window sheer, cover top loosely and screw cap on over it. Should hold back any fine particles, just not sure how strong your pump is because it will create quite a bit of restriction. I just use the cheapest i can find at menards

I had the exact same issue. Ended up ordering the TLF hydrocarbon to run in my reactor and that seems to be working. However after all that I found a post on another forum that said to reverse the flow through the reactor and it will work. I have not tried it.

WalMart- Polyfill 50 oz 100% polyester (Blue bag with pics of doll, pillows and a little girl surrounded by stuffed animals:0)

    Wedding veil should work also.

Thanks for the replies. I will try adding an additional sponge or polyfill.

I do use that carbon in a tlf 500 reactor….I have the same problem. You can try a couple different things….

    1. Fill the reactor and let it sit overnite. The fines will eventually sink. Then turn it on the next day and have your ball valve on slow flow so you don't burp fines up into the water column, then slowly adjust flow to where you want it.

    2. Run the reactor in reverse.

    3. Ditch that carbon because it is a PITA. That is what I am going to do once I run out of it.

Thanks. I called BRS today. They suggested using a piece of the blue bonded filter pad - or the filter sponge they have on the BRS reactors. I've got some of the blue bonded filter pad - so that is what I'm going to try next. For the moment I just put it in a fine mesh filter bag and set it in my sump near the drain tube.

I really wanted to try this as I got tired of the other carbon - didn't seem to matter how long I would rinse it, it would still leave a black film coming out.

This carbon is super clean, no doubt about that!

I run it in the BRS reactor and don't have any problems. Must be a little finer filter pad in those.
