   also when and how to trim it.

   If it starts getting dense and runs out of room to grow, then think about trimming it. Until then, let it go.
   
   The best things you can do for it are make sure it's got good light (65K bulbs) and that your water has to flow through it.
   
   I have a spraybar and a powerhead blowing water through mine.
