I recently started my first reef tank. Looking to buy some Chaeto in the Cedar Rapids area to put in my refugium/sump. I live north of Cedar Rapids, but I'm in town a few days a week. If someone has any overgrowth that they would part with, or can suggest a location that carries it?

If you’re ever close to Johnston area I would have some you could have for free.

Anyone in C.R. willing to part with some chaeto for mruck79?

If you don't get any and if you are going to Springfest, let me know and I'll bring you some! New tanks do not normally 'need' chaeto when they are first started unless it's showing pretty good/high nutrients;)

Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure if I needed any quite yet or not. I figured it would be better to get ahead of the nutrients than waiting for them to spike way up. I've got a pretty good diotom bloom going right now. I've read this is supposed to happen? I'm definitely a newbie.

Would this work as well as the Chaeto? I'm not committed to any macroalgea in general, just see a lot of people run chaeto.

There are differences between caulerpa and chaeto. Most people grow chaeto due to the potential for caulerpa to go sexual and potentially crash the tank. You can Google fern caulerpa and find info. There are other differences too

Thanks for the info Sponge. I did some reading about fern caulerpa and I did see that you can have issues with it. With my first Saltwater setup, I don't think I'm ready to take too big of risks! I researched and watched videos for 7-8 years before if finally got the nerve to start my saltwater setup and it still feels like I'm not ready! :) Can anyone suggest a online retailer for some chaeto that would be good? You can buy it fairly cheaply on Ebay, but I don't want to just dump anything into my system, and you never know about what you are getting. Seems like everything in this hobby is a balance between high cost and quality!
