couple weeks ago i purchased my first fish, a pair of false perculia clowns seemed they never would come out of the corner or feed, one would start to eat and then spit it out, the other wouldnt do much of anything at all. today the one clown died, and since my other has taken to moving about the entire tank and grazing on anything the floats by it.
is this normal? my understanding is clowns work better in pairs.

How long has your tank been set up.

What is your salinity & ammonia at?

If the tank isnt completely cycled you might have put them in a bad soup mix

One of my clowns did the same thing when they were new to my tank. It took her probably a week or so before she would freely move about and eat. I don't know that it's "normal" but I wouldn't be alarmed by it either. As for the one fish dying, that could be a water quality issue, as Craig indicated. The state of the cycle / stability of the tank is the biggest question. I would check your levels.

As for leaving a single Clown, I wouldn't fret. They can live alone. You can always add another if you'd prefer. I added mine at different times and they get along great. I was advised to get one of a different size - to make the paring a littler smoother. My second clown was much smaller, which is now the male and the original larger one is the female. They paired pretty easily.

Then I wouldn't sweat it...as long as it's eating and happy. Ensure the tank stays stable and then add another clown in another week or so, if you want another.
