My two clowns are starting to get black burns from trying to host something in my tank. I have yet to see them rub on anything besides my red monti. They might be doing it in the middle of the night however. Has anyone else's clowns gotten these burns? From what I've been reading it doesn't affect them really. I would like to hear some more personal experiences on it though.

are you sure they are burns, it may be a bacterial type infection. How do they look otherwise, eating good, and how are the other fish?

Yes, I'm positive that they are nematocyst burns. I've been looking into it for about 3 weeks. None of my previous clowns ever got them, but I always had anemones for them. I have no anemones in this tank. They are acting 100% healthy. They eat like pigs, swim normally, don't seem stressed, and no rapid breathing or anything. From everything I've looked up this case matches others dead on. However, none of the threads update long term. I was just wondering if they will eventually go away or scar?

Mine have black dots on them as well they come and go. But they never touch my nem. I know that they like to rub on my zoas.

That's what I'm assuming is happening. They are most likely hosting in my zoas at night. I am just hoping that they don't leave scars.

I wouldn't worry too much. My snowflakes get them every once in a while but they go away. I haven't seen any on my tomatoes that host in an actual 'nem. The snowflakes live in duncans.

That's good news! I would like to put a nem in my tank for them, but I'm worried about that in such a small space. As long as the coral hosting doesn't hurt them I'm fine with it.

Mine would root around in an Armor of God colony and the got those spots. It never seemed to effect them.

Hmm... that's interesting. I noticed only a few of them for the past couple weeks. I added some armor of gods last week and now they are covered in the spots. That's why I posted about it just now. I wonder if they have a more potent sting than most other zoas and palys.

Not sure. But their belly turned almost all black from it, because they kept doing it. Must not have bothered them.

My son had clowns that got spots from hosting in corals, his was frogspawn. After he added an anemone to the tank and they started hosting in it the spots went away and did not come back.

Don't know how far away you are but I have a RBTA in my sump you can have. Should fix the problem if you still concerned about it.

I appreciate that! I would've bought an anemone by now, but my display is only about 11 gallons and will be full of zoas and SPS soon. I'm worried about putting a nem in such a small area with all my livestock.

I moved from T5 lighting to LED, My clowns have very similar things. I think of it like a dark tan from the lighting? Had them for 2+ years under the LEDS and they are loving life. At least from what I can visually see.

I originally thought it was lighting as well. However, my tank has has led since it was set up. I noticed the spots after I added more zoas. After reading everything and hearing of others accounts I'm sure there is nothing to worry about.

I have a clown that was sold to me as a "picasso" it looks like a mix of something else. I got it when it was pretty small and it was mostly orange and white, very little black. After several months its started to get more black, started as spots but has turned to more patchy. Have been wondering what it could be. Active, eats and has started to look like its paired with a black snowflake and possibly getting ready to spawn. I keep new nems in cups until they are adjusted to the system. When the lights start to dim at night they swim in and out of one of the cups, sometimes one then the other, other times both at the same time. Its a rfa in the cup so they arent trying to host, unless they are and the nem isnt having it.
