My amazing fiance just signed me up for concealed weapons class! Has anybody taken the class? If so what all do you do in the class? She got a great deal on it. She got it for $39! It was originally $100. Its 3 hrs and after that you get a certificate stating you are able to carry a concealed weapon. I still have to buy the license but oh well. So anyways, anybody else take it?

    Thanks!!!!

    Travis

It covers just the basics. Different types of pistol firearms, different types of ammunition. Lots of situational stuff and tons and tons of safety stuff. You don't walk out with your certificate that says you can carry concealed you walk out with a certificate that says you took the class and then you take that to the sheriff's office and get your permit to carry. I have a friend who teaches these, he taught one at my house for a few of my friends to get our permits.

I reread my post. It was meant to say that... i will still have to pay gor my license but it will give the ability to get it without taking thier tests.

My luck would be id sit through the class and then not be able to get the license. Do i just go to the sheriffs office and they will just give me my license?

yeah its way to easy now, when i did it it was a 2 day thing, one class room setting and test, and the other was the next day at the range, you had to shoot a certain score or you couldn't get it, and also had to show how to handle the gun safely.

I believe they mail out your permit to carry/buy but not 100% on that

When I did mine it was a full day ½ class and ½ qualifying shooting which the class that went out to shoot first was so bad it took them like 6 hours and we had to shoot in the dark I still got a 98% hit rate but that was before I joined the Army so was about 9/10 years ago. Forgot to add you don't get a certificate to carry you just get a certificate that says you completed the class which you present to the Sheriff’s office and if approved THEN you can carry but most places now will not allow firearms on their property so places are very limited. I did locate some really awesome non-lethal rounds made of rubber with pepper capsule on the back of the projectile and won't penetrate the outer shell of walls if you’re interested in non-lethal rounds.

I like non lethal. A friend of mine took a similar class. Its 3 hrs of safety and common sense. Then i take 2 forms to the sheriffs office and then they will do a back ground check and mail it out in a couole weeks.

it gets mixed reviews but after reading them i know how to fix the issues.

And i know, its a .22. Lol mostly for target shooting till i can afford the real deal. .45! Or till a sheriffs deputy friend of mine hooks me up with an old berreta and old glock.

Out of the guns listed go with big d. You might want to watch out though on the less lethal rounds. Iowa is a flee state. I was told not to even use regular only hollow point. If you feel you have to use your weapon you shoot to kill. If you shoot to disarm or just drop them how in danger was your life. Shoot to kill dead men don't come back or tell a tale.

Just a heads up Travis, they will not let you qualify with a .22, I think it has to be 380 or larger which makes sense. You want stopping power! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/smile.gif I've got to say I love my Glock, it's a 40 cal and I only carry it with hollow points. I actually just pre-trained a buddy of mine by taking him out to the range to a get a feel for what he would be qualifying with, I would recommend most people to do just that. Good Luck!

There isnt any shooting involved... all i do is take a class, fill out forms, drop them off at the sheriffs department and they mail me my permit

Better choice? 45 cal. And cheaper. I will get a nice gun some time but for a first gun i want skmething that is cheap and i can afford to mess up.

U dont put a 16 yr old first time driver behind the wheel of GT500 do ya? Lol im 23excited and when i feel i got the shooting, cleaning, and comfort down ill get a nice gun.

Actually with the new law, there is no shooting requirement anymore.  There are some classes that are only 90 minutes, get your card, take it to the sherriff and boom permit to carry with never firing a shot.  While I am not one for extra laws this scares me a bit.  Someone who maybe new to firearms, never fired a shot could be packing, something just isn't right there.  I wish they would bring the shooting part back personally.  I like the idea that it is not up to the Sheriff who can have them anymore but getting a permit without shooting a gun, that's not right.  Not trying to hyjack the thread just pointing out the change in the law last year.
