I've been in the club for 8 years. It's the guys who have been in the club for years speaking out. And we all feel this way. I didn't pay the last couple of years because of people like this trying to beat the system. It needs to get fixed and I think we can move it in the right direction. Being down in Florida your never gonna be at the events. Your selling a 400 dollar coral I wouldn't pay 50 for. And to top it off you said your a dealer. It's the club rules. Too many guys abused it. And it's not far for business owners who sponsor and pay their dues to have to compete with someone who won't pay their membership fees. It protects club members too. Too many people are out to make a buck and sell something bad. Your in florida. We are up here in iowa. Nothing is known about you. Pay the fee and your welcomed to sell whatever. I'm not on the board. I'm a regular member.

Don't make another account to shade this one. This isn't exactly a dump group of corn shucking rednecks. Every time someone joins just to BST they get hazed out the door. Just like the the guy flipping equipment off Craigslist.

This thread is funny.. I was one of the original founders of this club a LONG time ago.. This started as a group of hobbyist to sit in Dan Hinch's garage and BS... Pretty amazed and proud how big this has become.. Although I left the hobby for awhile, I have come back and this club is stronger then ever.. Insults to some of the long time contributors is completely uncalled for.. Especially people like xroads who is always helping everyone out.. So you sir, have the wrong attitude for this hobby.

Wow, cmon guys lol.. Though the guy might be in Florida, who cares? So he posted a coral for sale, that's a contribution right? I think so.. Though I still enjoy being part of the club, I don't think he's completely in the wrong. I definitely don't agree with the 'you can't sell on here if you're not a member'. I can see how it might be a good idea, but with all the new ways of selling stuff online, who cares. I myself think that coral is definitely awesome, not sure I would pay that much though.

I've never been a social person, so the BST is the best part of the site to me. It's like-minded individuals in the hobby, who are here for a common goal. True, there is multiple aspects of the hobby, fragging, buying/selling, education, conservation, progressing a very in-depth field that is not widely studied... But we should be WELCOMING everyone, because only together will we keep the hobby a hobby, versus some small group of people that can't get along with the rest of the world, then it goes stale, then people find other avenues for their 'main fix' for local saltwater stuff. I've already met a few people who have started new sites/groups on fb that don't like GIRS. That's pretty depressing to me.

But again, not my rules, but I know people will leave if those 3 things are pushed because there is other places, and they're growing, that people can do the same-- for free.
Implement a rules that prevent that, or you have to be a member to post sales, or require a sponsor fee and you sacrifice the networking between people.(which I think 100$ is pretty high too, 10 sponsors is enough at that rate to host the website for a few years easily) If it's not we should look into better hosting lol.. (I do IT, and you can host a website for like 10-20$ a year now) Though there is events, etc, that have to be paid for, I would bet the table fee's pay for the building. (someone said it's like 500$ to even host a table?!)

I myself would love it if someone would post corals on here that is friends with an importer. Dunno if that guy is, but being in Florida, I bet he's "closer to the action".

I think the trash talking on both sides is worse than some guy out of state posting a sale.

No, BST activity has never been consider to be contributing in any way. Contributing to the site means posting meaningful content or helping someone out. Bottom line is that this user posted the exact same listing on multiple sites, so its pretty clear that he wasn't just posting it here for us or something like that - he's either a hobbyist seller or a business of some kind. The User Agreement is pretty clear on this issue.
The issue is that many, many people do not want this site to become an all-out trading post. If we just say "do whatever you want" to everyone, that's what it will become. So we limit these actions so that it doesn't go down that road. Other forums have had just that happen, and it kills the site. You get craigslisters that join here and throw up a bunch of stuff for sale and never contribute. That's not what we want.
We do welcome everyone. But that does not mean that we have to welcome all selling activity.
Plenty of other sites do the same thing. I understand what you are saying but if you are suggesting that we ease up on the rules so that we can "compete" with other sites where you can do the same for free, then you're missing the point. BST activity is not a right that is granted to everyone on this forum, and that is a decision that was made a long time ago. For the reasons stated above
Maybe if you are running on shared hosting with a free forum software. But that's not the case here. If it was, this site would be dreadfully slow due to the volume of activity - which is why it went to a full windows dedicated server about 4 years ago after MACNA. But the recent conversion allowed us to actually speed up the site, put it on a Linux server and cut the costs significantly (by roughly 70% monthly).
Find me a self-managed VPS with 120G of HDD, 4G of ram, and unlimited bandwidth on a reliable host for less that $40/month and an admin that knows WHM cPanel and shell and does it for free and we'll talk.
Um, what are you talking about??? $500 to become a major event sponsor maybe, but the vendor tables are less than 1/3 of that.

Overall I think you need to check your facts before you throw stones.
Agreed. I think this thread has served it's purpose, so I went ahead and locked it before I posted this.

Oh yeah and also one that know Xenforo administration like the back of their hand.

You do realize that I probably spent at least 400 hours on this website in the last year and a half, right? Forgive me if I don't feel just a bit insulted.

This was also suggested to me as part of the reasoning that I left out:
