My shrimp has gotten huge and has molted 4 times.  He only seems to molt however when I put iodine into the tank which is very seldom since I have been doing a lot of water changes.  Is this conincidence or actual?  Also he seems to be hunting for food all day long and I do feed him with a feeder once a day.  Should I be feeding more often?

Hey Karen. Just curious how you are feeding your shrimp. I just inherited one a couple weeks ago but just runs and hides when I put my hands in the tank. The other fish eat the food to fast so I am not sure he is getting enough nutrioution. Do you feed hime with your hands.

I bought a pyrex feeder from another site. Its like an 18 inch medicine dropper. I fed him with it a couple of times in his "hidey hole" and now he comes out and attacks it to get the food. Mine is a greedy little bugger though. I started off with a turkey baster but it was a little too forceful for him.

Regarding the molting and iodine......I don't have a coral banded, but I do have a cleaner and a fire shrimp. I used to dose iodine as well and found that molting was a regular event in my tank. I have since stopped dosing (couple months ago) and they haven't molted since. I did some reading in other SW forums and I guess there's some disagreement as to the role of iodine with shrimp. Some people swear that iodine is necessary for the proper development of the exosckeleton....others have argued that iodine is irritating to the shrimp and that's why they will molt frequently. I'm no expert on shrimp, but mine were molting every few weeks, when I dosed...that seems too frequent, to me. So, I stopped dosing. And since then they still seem to be ok and happy - big, hungry, active, etc..

Well the irritation thing makes sense to me. "Herbie" is certainly big enough and active enough without the iodine so I guess if not molting doesn't hurt them I will just leave it.
