I will be mounting my corals on the rocks in the next couple days. They've been sitting on the sandbed getting adjusted to the lighting for the last two weeks. My biggest question is whether it is ok to put high light corals near the top. The reason I'm concerned is when I do wc's, I turn off my return pump, let my sump fill to its "danger" level, drain the sump down to the normal lvl, then fill it with new water back to the "danger" level and turn the pump back on. While I am doing this however, a good 2-3 inches of the display tank gets drained. I'm getting use to water changes and at this point I usually take about 30-45min to do a wc. Most of that time is waiting for the tank to drain.
Anyway, if I were to put any corals towards the top, they would eventually be exposed to air during a water change as they grew taller. Is this ok? Should I avoid this?
Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance,
    Kylie

I dont know about that long but I do dain and fills on my bio cube and everything thing seems to be fine. Even at the store on the 125s I use a powerhead and drain the tank and fill it back up. I just shut off the lights so they dont get burned or dry out faster.

Ok, thanks. I'll be sure to turn off the lights so I don't cook anyone

Unless you have fish, crabs, etc. that might knock corals over, my suggestion is to make sure the corals are "happy" where you want them before gluing them down more permanently. There is nothing more annoying than having to move an epoxied coral LOL. Ask me how I know!!! As far as them being out of the water, I have seen plenty of videos of zoos/acros and others baking in the sun completely out of water in low tide. Some say that it is actually good for them. Some even go as far as injecting air into their pumps for a while each day to sort of simulate this effect. I am going to assume most of the stuff you plan to keep up top will be SPS. I personally wouldn't worry about them even with the lights on. 30 minutes shouldn't be overly long, although I do wonder why you wait that long? If you are getting the water parameters close to what they already are in the tank it is safe to just dump it in.

I'm sure it won't take nearly as long once I get things figured out and another bucket, but what takes the most time is my tank drains really slowly once I turn off the pump. It probably takes a good 15 minutes for the sump to fill to its emergency level and for the tank to stop draining. I'm still getting the hang of doing wc's on a big tank where I can't just dump my bucket in (gently) like I use to for my little 20g. Now I have the sump in stand and a canopy on top that limits my dumping ability. haha, that sounds funny : P

kylie something you can try is using a pump to pump your new water into your sump rather then dumping it.

Ok, new question. Does anybody have a good method for attaching cap corals? I have two good sized frags of red cap that I am trying to attach on the backside of one of my rocks in the corner where it will someday, have a lot of room to grow into a big colony. I've been trying just super glue gel and it doesn't seem to be holding, not to mention I can't see anything I'm doing back there. I'm going to try coral + glue + marine puddy + glue + rock as suggested by my boss but if you have any other suggestions, that would be great. Thanks!

I have kenya trees on top and when i drain water, tehy just limp over a bit to stay under water. I have had zoas out of water for a bit and they didn't mind. I would say just do some more research on SPS's if you want those on top tho...I have no experience with em'

My Cap corals I just glued the bottom (small piece) to the rock. Everything I have read says u can glue them wherever you want as long as it is not on the new growth edge.
