We were just considering the one-fest-a-year thing, nothing it set in stone and it's actually hardly been discussed since then. This idea up often and we'll have to put a lot of thought into it before making a change like that. So let's keep on this topic of the garage sale swap :)

Okay so.... Haha I will plan a swap meet. It will be on Camp Dodge and I will figure out a good weekend / month. No need for it to be special since we have our fest for that. This can be just a monthly meeting for all the regions or on top of the monthly meeting. I don't mind either way. Don't think we need to make a big to do on this. Just a if you "got time and extra stuff laying around you would like to sell, come on down" kind of thing. Hahaha

I would add that this should be equipment only unless some kind of deal was made to transport corals to another member. Otherwise I say stay away from live stock for this.

I'd definitely come to something like this. I also have stuff I want to get rid of, like the kind of stuff you aren't expecting to make money on really but is too valuable to give away.

@B_Braz@B_Braz let's chat about when, we have something cool in the works for the DSM region for possibly either the last weekend in March of the first weekend in April. So this might be a good one to do mid-March or mid-April, depending on the other event date and the Camp availability.

I also think once a year for this would be great. More of a turnout. I'm in and camp dodge sounds great. I also think the lower the cost the better. We should do it before springfest and then promote that after we all set up more tanks.

I was under the impression the junk swap of old used equipment would be more like a garage sale of stuff, was the suggestion to give all the $ to the club? I did not see this as a fundraiser but more of a social meeting and chance to get a few good deals.

Now there can be some who donate their items to he club or the club can make $ by selling popcorn or drinks whatever.

I think the goal will dictate the effort and involvement needed.

I had thought about having a dedicated area at the swaps for this.

    That was my thought
the latter, I saw it as just a stand alone regional event, not necessarily a club-wide event, and not a fundraiser
JMO but I think it's better to have it as an event within each region. Having it at the fest means you need that additional space and could be logistically difficult...but if we did a smaller regional swap with members only, maybe. That has been discussed (again, nothing in stone)

Members only will be a nice perk and a good selling point. When people ask what do they get with their membership, we can add this to the list.

i don't think that it would be nearly as good as a whole club thing if it was regional, some regions have a lot more members that may have something to sell.that to me would make it inviting to go if it wasn't regional.

I think we would have more to pick from if it was club wide. We could change the location if people wanted so it was held in a different region each time.

@gburkart@gburkart just because it's a regional event though doesn't exclude anyone else from other areas. That really goes for all regional events. Meaning, anyone from anywhere in the club can come and buy or sell.

Also, this hasn't really been done since I've been a member, so it could actually attract quite a few people to the club (i.e. joining to get in on it)

If we were to make it more of a club wide event, would having it in the middle of the summer when heat is not a factor (to corals, etc)?

My heat comment was with respect to not having a coral/livestock summer event because of the heat aspect. Therefore better for just equipment

I like the idea of opening it up to anyone. There are lot of freshwater fish keepers and there is equipment that can be used in both groups. And this would give the freshwater hobbyists a chance to talk to salt water hobbyists, man maybe get involved. Perhaps all GIRS member are free and all others $5 to $10. We don't need to allow the freshwater people to have a table. Just another way to introduce others to GIRS.

I wouldn't plan on an event at the beginning of April. There's the big swap with GPAA going on in omaha. I know I'm going to that. However th extra equipment swap would be a good idea. I've got 4 totes of stuff
