I have both a cracked tank and sump,
The sump has a cracked side, and the tank has a cracked bottom. My quesiton is can i just put some glass over the top of the glass with silicone and would it hold or do i have to replace the glass?

My opinion would be to replace them. The pressure is the major issue here. Just putting glass over broken glass and sealing it would take care of the leak but the pressure pushing down on the glass would still be there along with the added weight of the the new glass pushing on it. Thats just my opinion , I hope others will chime in here.

I agree that trying to repair this may be a disaster in the end. There is a lot of pressure on all sides of the tank. There is nothing you will be able to do to successfully repair the damaged glass. Just my 2cents.

Sorry to hear that! That defenetely sucks, I hope you get a new system set up quick here. If it was me, I wouldn't chance it. I'd buy a new tank and sump. When you got all that water and weight, I wouldn't trust trying to fix or cover up cracked glass. Time to renew. /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/sad.gif

The cracked side might work for a sump depending on how high the crack is. If its high up enough just get some aquarium silicone make sure its clean and apply it to the crack. Make sure you let it dry for atleast 48 hours so it cures. if the crack is too low (below half way) just buy a different tank or buy a new pane of glass. Good luck!

Tank should be replaced - glass is usually tempered on the bottom to handle stress and as others mentioned the weight on the bottom is an issue.
As for the sump, there's never been a sump that I've owned where I didn't crack the glass on one end or the other - never the front/back or bottom.
I will silicone a new piece of glass (or plexi) over the crack and have never had an issue.
If you're replacing the tank you might as well replace the sump at the same time - my repairs have always been more of an emergency where I didn't have another choice.
    Good luck!
    -Eric
