I am upgrading to a 125 reef, and would like some thoughts on what to use.  I have sand in my 75, but it is too fine.  I like the crushed coral in my 38 better.  Is there anything that would be better?

Personal preference. I've noticed that the crushed coral tends to clump together in big clumps, so I like the finer stuff. But the fine stuff is more likely to blow around with a lot of flow/direction of flow.

you may also consider what your wanting for live stock, pistol shrimp and jaw fish id like crush as i think there burrows hold up better where as some wrasses should have sand as they will bury themselves at lights out.

How fine is the sand in your 75? I got some special grade reef sand - I believe that's what it is called- for my tank. It is a coarser grade of sand and looks really good IMO.

Thanks for everyone's input, it is really helpful when you can get others opinion.

Mxc207, I find that it does have a tendencey to clump in the smaller tank.

Kpotter2, thanks for the pics, I looked at some on your other threads. Your tanks look great, I also like the mixture.

Xmasia, yes I do have a pistol shrimp so I will have to consider that. They should be able to burrow in a mixture, you would think so as long as it is not to coarse?

Blackx, I have really fine sand right now and I do not like it, I like the crushed I have in my 38, but wish it was a little finer.

Check out the special grade reef sand then. I think you will like the grain size of it.
