Buying a new tank from AC&C this month?
Consider going with a standard tank (not "Reef Ready"), drilling it (or have it drilled for you) and then buy an internal / external overflow box and BeanAnimal Silent & Failsafe Overflow system.
I'll be coming up with a set of standard sizes for use on various tanks. Plans/templates for hole locations will also be provided so that you know exactly where to drill it.
An internal weir type overflow skims the water surface in a highly efficient manner. The internal box is low profile and at the surface only, which leaves the entire footprint of your tank free and open.
Teeth may be used instead, but this does reduce surface water turnover.
The water then passes through bulkheads to the external box which houses a set of 3 drain pipes: a tuned siphon, an open channel, and an emergency drain. This is the original concept developed by the ReefCentral user 'BeanAnimal' - the 'Silent and Failsafe Overflow'. I swear by this system, it works exactly like it sounds.
I've received a couple of requests already do I wanted to post about this option for anyone who might be considering a new tank.
Contact me via PM or post so I can share answers for all!

That's what I was considering for that bow front overflow I talked to you about. Hopefully similar to the ghost overflow without the hefty price tag on it.

Yeah plus I don't advise buying the one from Reef Savvy since they pretty much commercialized Bean's design without even giving him a heads up or any kind of credit whatsoever for everything he has done related to that system.

Here is Bean's website where he describes the function of the system

    http://www.beananimal.com/projects/...ystem.aspx

Bean himself has told me that if he had to do his personal system over, he would go with the external box. The original design was based on what he could do with what he had at the time. And it works well, but I can tell you personally that the external box is the way to go, 100% - as long as you have the room, because you can make adjustments and clean/maintain it much easier (there is really zero maintenance unless something gets in a pipe and you have to tear things apart - rare)

Hi - I know this is a 6 month old post but I just came across it and I am in the process or researching/figuring out how to start a reef tank for the first time. I came across the "BeanAnimal" overflow design and would like to set it up. My tank is 60"x18"x26" 125 gallon, and I am going to ask my local glass shop to come drill it but if it's too expensive than give it a try myself. Please advice me if you have come up with standard sizes of bean animal overflow?

Sorry for the delayed response. I don't really have a standard size, I can make these any size you want. However right now work and family have completely taken over and I don't have any free time to do any additional acrylic work, as I am neck deep in a backlog of algae scrubber upgrades
