this is the email i sent to corporate offices of Petland,  I live 2 hours for most lfs so i stop at all fish stores when i travel

I have been going to petland every weekend since sept.  Your saltwater dept is horrible, you have 20 feet of space with 3 fish.  In sept I asked why there are no fish and the employee told me, the other employees buy all the fish when they come in.  In OCT a differnt employee told me that the salt water dept is not funded, so they really dont buy any fish. In NOV I was told that the person that ran the dept is no longer with the company.  In Dec was again told that the employees buy up all the fish.  So finaly in Jan i ask the OwnerOP, and the sales manager, response i get is employees have to wait a week, (even though the same employees their talking about have told me they buy them all), and that they buy enough fish to fill all the tanks.  If the weekend is your top sales then why is it there are no fish by friday.  I tell them then order more fish you are missing out on ton of sales, and they look at me like im stupid.  I dont think anyone at that location as far as decision makers know what they are doing, or how to run a business. Just an FYI since sept i have bought a 75g tank and complete set up for reef tank($1000) 16 corals ($700) T5 for my other tank (150) and over ($600) in fish for my 3 tanks, all from other stores, because at least when i go to the other stores they have everything i look for, and make an attempt.  I drive 2 hours to go to iowa city with my uncle, we have decided that PetLand is not worth our time.

I definitely wouldn't bother with going to Petland. Have you tried Sea of Marvels in North Liberty or Coralville Bay in Iowa City/Coralville?

I worked at Petland for 7 years in the fish department. Sice then they have totally let it go to total hell. The owner is an IDIOT, and most of the employees they have are idiots + they have no idea what they're talking about. Honestly though, there aren't many fish guys outside of the club communities that do know what they're talking about.

You're wrong about Bronson, he's an idiot. Especially with saltwater stuff. Elliot is the only guy they have left and he only works one day a week so it's hard for him to make a difference.

The owner Petland has long ago decided that the fish department bleeds money and isn't worth his time or investment (even though back in the day we were netting 250k profit/yr). Since then the fish department has been put on a strict buy back budget. Since nowadays they can't hardly keep anything alive you reach a point of diminishing returns and eventually have no livestock left. The filtration, electrical and lighting badly need to be reworked and remodeled in that department. Like I said though, Ron wrote that department off long ago.

BTW the saltwater section is 16' ~800 gallons, and there might actually be 4 fish in there lol

On the topic of employee purchases. They basically never order anything worth having unless an employee orders it for themselves. That is not, they order it, like it, and then take it. But rather that they see it on a list, and order it in with the agreement that they will pay for it straight away no matter the condition (unless it's DOA). Otherwise they just never buy saltwater stuff to stock with. I'm sure a little cherry picking goes on, but what else do you work at a fish store for? It's certainly not the pay!

Brunson had good customer service, he was the only one that didnt act like he knew everything.  As far as buying from fish stores, im a impulse buyer "i see, i want"  SoM is a must for anyone stopping in the IC area, actually like PetCo also, they have some nice cheap starter corals, and always seem to have new supply every week, plus there right next to Bww

Be careful with Petco. Really look at there fish. They have had problems before with there fish and Ich. I seen your post on your clowns and I have seen there clowns have Ich about 3 weeks ago. I would buy from them you are right they have great prices, but i would look at there health before I buy. As I would with any Retailer except Hung at Sea of marvel. He has everyone beat on that department. You may pay a little more at most, but his fish and corals I find they are with out question healthy and happy. I have never seen a sick fish in there unless he has taken it in to get back to good health.
Coralville bay is also a great place. Its ture Petland has been a joke for some time now. I only look now, back in October when I set my first tank up the saltwater looked great, but it has slipped badly.

    Andy,

I had always held you in the highest regard based on your reputation.

On what basis do you consider me an idiot?

We personally only met once and all we said to each other was hi so I don't see where you are coming from.

The only thing I can think of is that you are good friends with Elliot and he doesn't like me.

This all started after I replaced Kylie when she quit. I felt obligated to give her an employee discount on a bunch of corals she wanted for her tank the day after she left. That didn't sit well with Elliot and I don't think he's like me ever since.

I agree with alot of post where the consensus is that the marine section had declined. It not only declined but it was completely torn down because they where going to do away with the section all together.

I grew up around fish. My grandpa had fish, my dad had fish, which in turn led me to have fish. You could say I was born into the hobby and to me it's more than a hobby it's my passion.

I base most things I tell people off first hand experince. I've figured tons over the years bouncing concepts I've learned in the hobby with thing I've learned while working my way through pharmacy school. I dont pretend to know it all, I'm always learning new things.

I took over the Petland fish department about a year ago and am doing my best with what I have to work with. I basically had to start from scratch.

There's more to marine than just fish. As a business standpoint I realize I can't compete with places like Sea of Marvels when it comes to fish. Hungs a great guy but not many people have the space to have a 4 foot shark.

I currently have around 400 gallons to work with when it comes to marine. I love corals so that's where I dedicate most of my time and budget. I like to operate on a pre-order bases when it comes to fish because I only have so much space and can't have a setup that I would like. I personally would like to have a quarantine system which I feel is imperative when it comes to marine fish. I just don't have the space or budget for it.

I presonally have a great relationship with all the store owners and employes in the Iowa City-North Libery area. That being said I feel my coral selection is better than most within the area.

I encourage everyone to check out my tanks and come in and talk fish with me.That way you can form your own opinion on me.

I don't care whether you buy anything or not I just love the hobby. I mean what better job is there than to geek out with other fish enthusists and talk about the hobby all day.

If you do decide to buy something just mention GIRS and I'll sell you anything at 30% above wholesale cost. That's same discount we give to all employees so you be getting everything at the same price I'd be buying them being the manager of the store.

I'd also sell you any amount of fiji cultured live rock at 4.99 per pound. That's usually only offered if you buy 50# or more.

You'd have to talk to me personally though because I don't allow the other fish employees to do this because I like to keep track of all stock within the store.

I just got in a nice selection of ORA sps. Here's a great chance to get some awesome corals and a pretty decent price.

In closing I'll post a pic of some of my stock and hope to chat with you guys soon.

    Have a wonderful day!

I have my reservations with Petland.. They are often misinformed or just flat out wrong. Which is OK. That is part of the hobby is learning new things. We are not all marine biologists. If we were things would be really easy!

The biggest issue I have is hearing things like 'you need to make sure your calcium is perfect before you set your fish up' Or "a cycle can be done in two weeks" Things like this make me really nervous. I am no expert. I am a hobbyist. I have been doing this for a long long time, but none of this I have ever heard before going to petland. I have also personally seen them mark up live rock with 'anemones' living on them and charging people for Aptasia.

I personally do not shop there. And I would not send anyone I knew there.

*EDIT* I want to go ahead and add that I don't like to participate in bashing threads especially when it comes to something that could be considered preferences. However in this case, I cannot defend Petland based on my experiences there, as well as other hearsay and reputation...

Once again, I could care less whether or not you go there to shop. Come in to just chit chat with me and check out my tanks.

The only one there that knows anything about fish is me, so if your expecting expert marine advice from a puppy sales associate I would consider that pretty misinformed as well.

I do staff 2 very nice college girls that are very knowable when it comes to reptiles but they are just there to help bag fish when I'm not around. I can't be there 24/7.

I have sold bubble tip anemones in the past on live rock for $15, I've never marked up the price. The live rock was basically free to anyone noticing the deal.

If you have seen stuff like then it has to have been at least 3 and a half years ago before I worked there. But then again that's when Andy was running the department and I doubt he'd do anything like that.

This thread is 2 years old... ive been to petland a time or two. Its ok. Seemed pricey but normal for iowa. I stood there for 30 min for help and gave up. The puppy area definitely takes 90% of the business which is awesome but not having available fish staff suck for us aquaria finatics. Lol

I have to be honest, theres a lot of people who've left complaints on here about Petland. Having read these I feel obliged to leave my POSITIVE remarks. I grew up in Belvidere Illinois, a short distance from Petland in Cherry Valley (Rockford IL). If it were'nt for Petland I never would have entered the Saltwater hobby just out of high school in 2009. They cut me a deal on a 29 gallon tank, matched the lowest price (new) that I could find, sold me a good stand and gave me X% off all my purchases thereafter as I entered the hobby, they even held the door open a couple of times as I hastily phoned them at the last minute before closing, arriving after they closed, only to purchase (NOTHING), rather to have my fears calmed over about 30 minutes of good advice that I probably could have gotten over the phone but how was I to know better?

I SAY THIS: I WAS A COMPLETE SALTWATER NOOBIE, KNOWING NOTHING, HAVING NEVER EVEN HAD FRESHWATER EXPERIENCE. TO SOMEBODY ENTERING THE HOBBY THEY WAITED ON ME IN A WAY PETCO, PETSMART NEVER WOULD HAVE.

I was a FISH ONLY guy, a ROOKIE, not a REEF JUNKIE with an all in attitude. I was totally unsure of the whole thing, they helped to keep me interested in it.

.. I moved to Iowa (Ames) in fall of 2010, soon thereafter around December I began to abandon the hobby because of college and a complete lack of funds, no stores nearby would match the price I had been getting at Petland, or carried a regular stock of the goods I prefered. Driving to Petco in WDSM got old, fast...

MANY THINGS HAVE CHANGED SINCE THEN, NOW I'M ALL IN, I'VE GOT YOU GUYS & GOOD FRIENDS IN THE HOBBY WHO WILL STOP BY, TAKE IN SOME FISH WHEN I SCREW UP, LEND ME A HAND TILL 1AM... THE LIST GOES ON!

Now as I return to the hobby, I am really all into it, and plan to far surpase my previous involvement... not just getting my feet wet anymore, I'm diving in head first.

I don't really prefer petland, petco, petsmart, or any place in particular... for the most part I don't care, I have more patience, I'll check with ya'll first before I rush to a store to buy something. I have a NEW & more social aproach to the hobby, spending time here on the forum. YES, today if I had some sort or real source of wealth I would try to find a clean, friendly local fist store, but I've found LFS out of my price range and sort of... well... yeah?... I won't say but some may notice..

TO A NEW GUY GETTING INTO IT, NOT KNOWING OF A REEF CLUB. ETC: I'M PROUD TO SAY CHEERS TO PETLAND!!!! /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Been there lately? Dont bother. Last time I tried to purchase from there the carpet anemone was nearly ripped in half and when there was a maxi I wanted, I had to get it out of the tank myself.
