I have what I believe is some red Cyano or slime algae on one particular rock and it is growing. I am reading up on removing it, and I hear if you scrib it away it is difficult to get ride of it all and some of it is on a plug with some polyps that will be hard to remove from the plug. I read to weaken or get rid of it is to turn off the lights for 3 days and also that cyano does not grow well in high flow areas.

My plan would be to leave the lights off for 3 days and point a power head directly at it for that duration.

    Thoughts?

Will that plan just loosen and spread the algae to other parts of the tank? I could also move the one rock to a seperate tank and leave the lights out on that tank for several days if I have too btu that is much more work.

    Thanx for the advice.

I'm still pretty new to the addiction, but I had a pretty bad cyano problem. What worked for me was reducing my light by a couple hours a day and feeding a lot less(feeding was my issue). I also pointed a small power head at it. All in all it took 3 weeks to clear. Now I'm all clear of cyano and things are looking great.

Your system is still new Borky. You can clean it off, siphon it off, or scrub it, but your tank is still finding its balance. With continued good husbandry it will go away on its own.

I am going to clean off the largest area on a rock and one frag plug. I can see a little in the sand bed on the opposite side of the tank. That I may just siphon out on water change day. I may also move the power heads around a little bit I probably have some dead spots, but once the sump is running I will have some more movement in the tank.
